Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our backend team and contribute to the core systems critical to operating our platform effectively for millions of readers. Reporting to the Head of Engineering within the Core Experience pod, this role involves taking full ownership of backend services, implementing features rapidly, and enhancing system reliability and performance. As a key contributor in a relatively small engineering team, your input and work will shape product development continuously.
Key Responsibilities
- Take swift ownership of customer-facing backend components and deploy new features within weeks of joining.
- Engage comprehensively in projects from initial design and planning through to delivery, ensuring collaboration with stakeholders to refine technical solutions.
- Adapt to and contribute within a lean and agile development environment without strict adherence to any single framework.
- Communicate technology concepts effectively across departments and translate non-technical requirements into workable technical plans.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of five years' experience with TypeScript, demonstrating proficiency with Async/Await constructs.
- At least three years' experience developing with Node.js.
- Three or more years working with relational databases, preferably MySQL or PostgreSQL, but other RDBMS experience is acceptable.
- Strong enthusiasm for continuous learning and professional development.
- Critical thinker capable of making judicious technical decisions.
- Expertise in writing efficient, scalable code and spotting detrimental coding patterns.
- Experience with caching technologies such as ElasticSearch and Redis or Valkey.
- Proven history of delivering and scaling reliable services in a consumer-facing product environment.
- Experience managing safe rollout processes including monitoring system stability and risk mitigation.
