Senior Applied Scientist, AWS Security

Role Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy large-scale AI/ML systems processing petabytes of security log data with real-time inference capabilities.
• Perform comprehensive data analyses and create prototypes to identify previously unknown security vulnerabilities.
• Define and pursue research agendas autonomously to address ambiguous and complex problems with minimal guidance.
• Explore, develop, and advocate innovative technologies to resolve scientifically challenging security issues.
• Build consensus on analytical methods balancing rigorous science with the urgent nature of security operations.
• Mentor team members technically and professionally to foster growth.
• Contribute to scientific knowledge by publishing patents and peer-reviewed articles, and presenting research internally and externally.

About the Team

This position is part of Amazon Active Defense, specializing in automating security measures at scale within AWS. The team integrates security engineers, applied scientists, and developers to create advanced analytics that detect and mitigate threats in near real-time, focusing on countering advanced actor activities on internal resources.

Basic Qualifications

• PhD or Master’s degree with six or more years of applied research experience.
• Proven experience leading technical teams as a mentor or tech lead.
• At least three years of professional experience developing machine learning models for business applications.
• Experience deploying AI/ML models into production environments that have demonstrable customer impact.
• Strong programming or scripting skills (e.g., Python) applied to solving practical problems.
• EU member state nationality is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Applied AI/ML experience in cybersecurity, fraud detection, or related domains.
• Experience building and deploying Generative AI applications.
• Familiarity with large-scale distributed systems such as Hadoop and Spark.
• Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services including SageMaker, Bedrock, EMR, Glue, Lambda, and S3.
