Job description
About the Role
As a Senior Analytics Engineer at Sky New Zealand, you will be pivotal in converting data into trusted, scalable, and reusable data assets that drive measurable business impacts and support informed decision-making organization-wide. The position demands significant autonomy; you will be responsible for managing complex data challenges from initial discovery to deployment, ensuring solutions fulfill user requirements and align with Sky’s strategic objectives.
This senior position involves hands-on responsibilities such as modelling, testing, deploying, documenting, and continuously refining data products using current technologies like Snowflake and dbt. Collaboration across teams will be essential to gain a deep understanding of data sources and business contexts, define success criteria, and maintain product accuracy, security, accessibility, governance, and integration into decision processes. Additionally, you will mentor less experienced engineers, enhance engineering standards, and foster skill development within the wider analytics community.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of analytics products, including conformed data models, reusable datasets, business intelligence artifacts, and AI agents, ensuring they are fit for purpose.
- Confidently navigate complex and unclear data problems independently, making technically sound decisions and delivering solutions from discovery through production rollout.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders to comprehend user needs, business workflows, and data contexts, translating these insights into maintainable solutions with clear delivery strategies.
- Define and track measurable success metrics for data products, utilizing evidence, user feedback, and usage data to enhance value and adoption.
- Uphold and advance Sky’s analytics engineering best practices through robust data modelling, peer reviews, testing, documentation, version control, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) methodologies.
- Ensure all data products meet standards for accuracy, security, availability, quality, retention, and are supported by comprehensive metadata, lineage tracking, and governance policies.
- Deploy production-grade datasets and AI agents leveraging Snowflake Intelligence, employing optimal data visualization tools and strategies to support effective decision-making.
- Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to junior engineers and the broader Analytics and BI teams, promoting best practices and offering constructive technical leadership.
- Maintain a mindset geared toward continuous improvement by staying abreast of emerging data and analytical technologies, acquiring new skills, and identifying opportunities to elevate Sky’s data capabilities.
Required Skills and Experience
- A minimum of six years in roles involving modern data platforms, business intelligence, and analytical functions, including at least two years working with dbt or comparable data transformation and modelling frameworks.
- Expert-level SQL abilities with a strong track record of designing scalable, secure, and repeatable cloud-based data solutions; deep comprehension of data architecture principles, ETL/ELT processes, data governance, quality assurance, and compliance.
- Proven experience collecting requirements, documenting business processes, designing data models, preparing data warehouse documentation, and implementing version control and CI/CD pipelines utilizing tools such as GitLab.
- Strong communication and presentation skills coupled with effective stakeholder engagement capabilities; adept at linking technical deliverables to tangible business results.
- Demonstrated collaborative leadership qualities, including mentorship experience, contributions to technical standards, and capacity-building within analytics communities.
- A solution-focused, accountable approach combined with commercial awareness, ease with managing change, and dedication to ongoing professional development; familiarity or certification with Snowflake, AWS, Power BI, and subscription services is a plus.
