Recognized globally as the first commercial quantum computer provider, D-Wave offers a dual-platform approach encompassing both annealing and gate-model quantum technologies. Its mission is to deliver immediate, enterprise-level quantum computing solutions, accessible on-premises and via the high-availability Leap™ quantum cloud service. Over 100 organizations across various sectors rely on D-Wave to tackle complex computational challenges through quantum approaches.
Role Overview
The Senior Algorithm Researcher position involves innovating and advancing state-of-the-art optimization tools designed to solve extensive, real-world combinatorial problems. This role is embedded within the Algorithms, Performance, and Tools (APT) team and requires collaborating with multidisciplinary groups including scientists, engineers, and domain specialists. Contributions will directly enhance high-performance optimization solvers and quantum-enhanced services.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and enhance new functionalities, optimize algorithms, and remedy defects within D-Wave's optimization solvers.
- Architect, code, and refine sophisticated optimization algorithms utilizing both heuristic and exact methodologies for large-scale combinatorial challenges.
- Manage projects and technical initiatives independently from inception to completion, aligned with strategic objectives.
- Support the design and implementation of proprietary solver architectures and contribute to open-source optimization modeling tools.
- Partner with product development, engineering, and professional services to tailor solutions that meet authentic customer requirements.
- Keep current with cutting-edge research in discrete optimization and hybrid quantum-classical algorithms, integrating promising innovations into existing solver frameworks.
- Identify and drive improvements in solver efficiency and codebase optimization proactively.
Candidate Profile
- Possesses an advanced degree in Operations Research, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or related fields, or equivalent professional experience.
- Brings over five years of hands-on experience applying algorithmic and optimization techniques to complex problems in practical settings.
- Experienced in developing solvers within at least one specialization such as Constraint Based Local Search, Constraint Programming, Mixed Integer Programming, Routing/Scheduling engines, or SAT solvers.
- Proficient in implementing algorithms using C++ and Python programming languages.
- Knowledgeable in combinatorial algorithms, discrete optimization, and familiar with platforms like Gurobi, SCIP, CPLEX, Hexaly, or OR-Tools.
- Informed about current heuristic and exact methods in discrete optimization.
- Capable of accurately estimating project scopes and anticipating challenges, adapting approaches proactively.
- Exhibits exceptional technical communication, facilitating clear cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Demonstrates a continuous improvement mindset, identifying inefficiencies and promoting constructive changes.
- Creative and responsible problem-solver, capable of working effectively under technically challenging scenarios.
Organizational Culture
- Embraces forward-thinking perspectives, uncovering possibilities where others perceive limitations.
- Values openness, active listening with empathy, and respects diverse viewpoints to foster mutual inspiration and learning.
- Commits to accountability, responsible decision-making, and supportive teamwork.
- Encourages leadership that motivates teams to surpass expectations while fostering growth and empowerment through coaching.
