Job description

About the Group

The Seagate Design Engineering team includes specialists across ARS, Electrical Integration, Servo, Mechanical, Test Process, and Firmware functions. The Advanced Recording Subsystem (ARS) team focuses on Head Disk Electrical (HDE), Head Disk Mechanical (HDM), and Channel preamp disciplines. ARS-HDE members work across three design centers worldwide, collaborating with global engineering teams, technology partners, and manufacturing units to push recording technologies forward. The group manages drive development through design, integration, qualification, and launch, prioritizing optimal head-media matching, robust component integration, and feature systems aimed at advancing areal density.

Role Summary

In the position of Advanced Recording Engineer on the ARS-HDE team, you will help develop cutting-edge recording technologies supporting future hard disk drives to expand storage capacity and performance. Responsibilities include working with emerging technologies like Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) and focusing on diverse topics such as Adjacent Track Interference (ATI) mitigation, laser controls, VBAR algorithms, and head-media electrical characterization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and research state-of-the-art magnetic recording technologies and concepts.
  • Build proof-of-concept demonstrations to validate new recording ideas.
  • Design, integrate, test, and optimize recording subsystems for product improvement.
  • Lead technology exploration projects to enable next-generation storage solutions.
  • Plan and conduct experiments examining interactions among recording parts and subsystems.
  • Create software tools and scripts to automate experimental procedures and data analysis.
  • Collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Take increasing ownership of research projects and investigations, working independently.

Candidate Profile

  • Interest and enthusiasm for research, innovation, and emerging technology developments.
  • Strong curiosity to solve complex engineering problems independently.
  • Hands-on with laboratory setups, experiments, and technical research activities.
  • Analytical thinking and excellent problem-solving acumen.
  • Effective team player with multi-disciplinary collaboration skills.
  • Quick to adapt and willing to learn new technical domains continuously.
  • Dedicated to ongoing learning and technical mastery.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Photonics, or related field.
  • Solid grounding in electromagnetics, applied physics, signal processing, or related disciplines.
  • Familiarity with magnetic recording, data storage, spintronics, photonics, optics, or semiconductor tech is advantageous.
  • Programming skills in Python, C/C++, and Procomm Plus.
  • Experience in hands-on experimental research, lab measurements, data modeling, or technical investigations.
  • Comfort with scientific methods, hypothesis testing, and developing proof-of-concepts.

Location and Facilities

The role is based at the Shugart site in Singapore, a design and research center conveniently accessible via One-North MRT. The site offers excellent recreational amenities including badminton courts, table tennis, gym, and community activities such as photography, gardening, language classes, and volunteer programs promoting employee engagement and well-being.
