Job description
Role and Impact
Become a member of Xero's Search team as a Search Engineer, responsible for maintaining and enhancing one of the largest search clusters in the Southern Hemisphere. Manage infrastructure that supports more than 200,000 daily active users, with over 50 million documents searchable and 400TB of data, while ensuring 99.9% uptime.
Responsibilities
- Develop your search engineering skills through meaningful projects, balancing search-specific and general engineering tasks.
- Participate in collaborative code reviews with experienced engineers and progressively assume greater responsibilities as your expertise grows.
Team Environment
You will join a compact and closely connected distributed team across Melbourne, New South Wales, and New Zealand, which is part of the Catalyst platform division. Collaborate closely with a Product Manager, a Principal Architect, and the larger Catalyst Platform team, providing excellent opportunities to learn search engineering at scale alongside senior technical experts.
Current Projects
- Contribute to the Horizon 2 platform rebuild, a long-term four-year initiative to modernize the search platform.
- Assist in maintaining and evolving the search cluster to uphold 99.9% uptime despite operating at massive scale.
- Integrate ingestion pipelines as part of the Operational Data Layer (ODL) within the new platform framework.
- Collaborate on new partnership integrations involving Mobile, Files, and AI-enhanced search capabilities.
Work Location
This position supports remote working within Australia or New Zealand or a hybrid model from company offices. The team convenes in Melbourne roughly twice a year for in-person collaboration with optional office days to encourage face-to-face interaction.
Candidate Profile
- Experience in search engineering, having built or maintained search systems with a desire to deepen domain expertise.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, capable of producing clean, maintainable code.
- A growth-oriented attitude, keen to learn from senior engineers and solve increasingly challenging problems.
- Excellent collaboration skills, able to work effectively with engineering, product, and infrastructure teams in a distributed setup.
- Proactive approach and sense of ownership, eager to undertake tasks with enthusiasm and seek support when needed.
