The Municipal Utilities department is seeking a dedicated permanent full-time Scale Operator to manage daily operations of the landfill scale, transfer station, and recycling station, supporting the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the landfill scale to record vehicle weights for inbound and outbound traffic and collect disposal fees.
- Welcome and provide customer service to all visitors to the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management.
- Manage traffic flow entering and leaving the landfill site.
- Identify and screen waste materials, ensuring prohibited items are detected, and guide users to proper disposal and storage areas.
- Maintain records of customer billing accounts, support monthly accounts receivable submissions, and conduct month-end cash consolidation.
- Upkeep and maintenance of the scale, scale house, landfill grounds, and related equipment, including cleaning and snow removal duties.
- Assist customers at the Transfer/Recycling Station with recycling awareness, hazardous waste identification, and directing users to correct disposal points.
- Ensure confidentiality and comply with records management policies, including legislation under Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
- Perform general litter picking; occasionally operate equipment involved in transfer station and landfill face operations.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Valid Class 5 driver's license is mandatory.
- Clean criminal record check and driver’s abstract are required.
- Proficient computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office applications.
- Prior experience working at a landfill is an advantage.
- First Aid certification is considered a plus.
- Capability to obtain Landfill Certification and/or Transfer Station Certification is beneficial.
- Ability to interact professionally, courteously, and effectively with waste haulers, the public, and colleagues.
- Willingness to work compressed work weeks, including weekends and overtime.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in line with County policy and relevant privacy legislation (POPA and ATIA), and comply with established records management practices.
