About the Role
SMEI Projects is currently seeking a proficient Safety Officer to join a significant SMPP engineering and construction initiative in Zambia. This position involves ensuring compliance with health and safety standards and managing safety operations on a large infrastructure project.
Key Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a National Diploma or an equivalent recognized qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Professional registration with a safety authority such as SACPCMP or a similar entity.
- Holding valid Incident Investigation certifications alongside a current driver’s license.
- A minimum of five years’ experience as a Safety Officer within major SMPP engineering and construction projects.
- Comprehensive understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulations, and relevant Zambian standards.
- Demonstrated skill in preparing and maintaining Project Health and Safety Files.
- Strong proficiency in computer use, particularly Microsoft Office suite.
- Exemplary personal conduct including sober habits and a readiness to work away from home.
Additional Advantage: Possession of a current First Aid Certificate and prior experience in similar infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Execute and uphold the Project Health and Safety Plan throughout the project lifecycle.
- Conduct daily safety inspections, audits, and comprehensive risk assessments on site.
- Investigate any incidents or near-miss events promptly and thoroughly.
- Deliver toolbox talks and induction sessions to personnel for health and safety awareness.
- Maintain statutory registers and manage all legal appointments related to safety compliance.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness and response strategies.
- Effectively liaise with clients, engineers, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance and safety standards.
