Safety Engineer

Role Overview

The Safety Engineer will be responsible for implementing and overseeing Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) standards at a railway project site. This includes ensuring adherence to Indian Railways safety protocols, project guidelines, and statutory regulations to maintain a secure working environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement HSE policies and monitor their compliance throughout the railway construction project.
• Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments to detect and mitigate unsafe conditions and work practices.
• Develop and enforce Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Risk Assessments, Method Statements, and Safety Checklists tailored to various construction tasks.
• Oversee safety aspects during excavation, earthwork, concreting, reinforcement, structural works, lifting, welding/gas cutting operations, working at heights, and equipment handling.
• Manage safety procedures for operations near live railway tracks, permanent way activities, traffic blocks, line crossings, and railway possessions.
• Ensure the proper use and availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as helmets, safety shoes, reflective jackets, gloves, harnesses, and goggles.
• Organize and lead Tool Box Talks, safety inductions, training sessions, and awareness programs for workers, supervisors, engineers, and subcontractors.
• Monitor safe deployment and operation of heavy machinery including JCBs, excavators, cranes, compressors, generators, and concrete equipment.
• Maintain adequate workplace safety measures including barricading, signage, access control, lighting, housekeeping, and emergency preparedness.
• Document daily safety inspections, training activities, PPE issuance, equipment checks, and follow-up corrective actions.
• Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe events; prepare detailed reports with recommended corrective and preventive measures.
• Liaise with railway officials, PMC/consultants, project managers, site engineers, P-Way personnel, and subcontractors to assure safety compliance.
• Ensure subcontractors adhere to all project-specific HSE protocols and railway safety standards.
• Supervise compliance with permits including excavation, lifting, electrical, hot work, and working-at-height permits.
• Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, mock drills, first aid arrangements, fire safety plans, and emergency response protocols.
• Track and ensure timely closure of safety observations raised by Railway/PMC authorities.
• Prepare and submit comprehensive daily, weekly, and monthly HSE reports and Management Information System (MIS) documents to project leadership.
• Keep all necessary safety registers, inspection records, statutory paperwork, certificates, and HSE documentation up to date.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Thorough understanding of Railway Construction Safety standards and HSE practices.
• Familiarity with safety requirements across ROB (Road Over Bridge)/RUB (Road Under Bridge), bridges, track work, earthwork, and civil engineering activities.
• Expertise with safety tools including Risk Assessments, Job Safety Analysis, Method Statements, Permit to Work systems, Toolbox Talks, and Safety Audits.
• Strong hazard identification ability and risk management skills.
• Excellent communication and coordination capabilities.
• Proficiency in MS Excel and Word for preparing safety documentation and reports.
• Capacity to operate independently at a railway construction site coordinating multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Experience and Certifications

• Experience working within Indian Railways projects or railway infrastructure involving ROB/RUB and bridge construction sites.
• Knowledge of railway traffic blocks, live track working procedures, Overhead Equipment (OHE) electrical safety, and permanent way safety regulations.
• Certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, ADIS, or a Diploma in Industrial Safety are advantageous.
• Proven track record handling safety on extensive civil or railway construction projects is preferred.

Compensation

The monthly salary range for this role is INR 25,000 to INR 45,000.
