Position Overview

This role is based in the Clarington Region and operates from St. Francis of Assisi CES in Newcastle. The position requires 25 hours per week over 12 months a year with flexible hours after 2:30 PM. Applicants from different classifications within the organization must undergo an interview and reference checks, with the interview contributing 70% and reference checks 30% towards eligibility as per collective agreement Article 12.02.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare schools for daily entry, ensure electrical and mechanical systems function efficiently, and secure buildings in coordination with the Principal or Supervisor.
  • Maintain cleanliness by sweeping, stripping, scrubbing, waxing, polishing hard floors and stairs; vacuuming carpets and rugs; wiping furniture and ledges; cleaning blackboards; washing windows and walls; and upkeeping staff room appliances.
  • Sanitize washrooms, door handles, drinking fountains, and sinks while replenishing consumables.
  • Collect and dispose of refuse including emptying pencil sharpeners and waste baskets.
  • Clear entrances and walkways from snow and debris, apply sand or salt when needed.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of building structures, playgrounds, fences, and roof drainage; log playground equipment conditions.
  • Maintain grounds appearance by removing litter, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, and weeding flower beds.
  • Perform minor mechanical, electrical, and plumbing maintenance tasks including lubricating motors, repairing furniture, servicing cleaning equipment, roof debris removal, replacing bulbs or fuses, and resetting timers.
  • Report urgent maintenance needs such as broken windows or system malfunctions.
  • Handle moving, assembling, and organizing furniture and equipment; assist in receipt and distribution of school supplies.
  • Manage ordering and inventory of custodial materials.
  • Maintain and manage Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Record utility meter readings and log salting/sanding activities; inspect fire extinguishers and support fire drills.
  • Supervise and coordinate student summer helpers and train substitute custodial staff.
  • Operate and understand key building systems including gas, oil, electricity, water valves, electrical panels, dampers, computerized energy management (heating and air conditioning), fire, alarm, and security systems.
  • Perform regular heat and security checks.
  • Conduct water testing activities when required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 10 plus up to one year vocational training, or Grade 11 or equivalent, accompanied by six months to one year of relevant experience.
  • Capability to perform minor maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Proficiency in operating equipment like lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, wet/dry vacuums, scrub machines, carpet cleaners, snow blowers, germicidal cleaners, strippers, ladders, and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) standards.
  • Familiarity with Board and school policies including property rental and emergency procedures.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with staff, students, parents, and community members.
  • Valid Driver's License and own transportation to travel across the Board's jurisdiction.
