Roaming Network Officer

About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Roaming Network Officer to join our team and contribute to impactful environmental and meteorological work. This hybrid role requires the majority of time spent within our weather station network, some days in our Watnall office, and some working remotely from home. The opportunity is full-time (37 hours per week), with flexibility for a minimum 30 hours per week or job-sharing arrangements to support work-life balance.

The role involves extensive travel throughout the UK to manage and support land observation sites, as well as occasional visits to our Exeter headquarters to assist the Surface Observations Operations Team.

Core Responsibilities

• Ensure the highest standards of quality, punctuality, and availability for land surface observation data.
• Oversee the performance and maintenance of observation sites and instruments, including installation, repairs, and site assessments against documented standards.
• Support and guide voluntary observers and site authorities to improve observation quality and compliance.
• Manage site metadata collection and archival following international protocols.
• Plan and optimize site visits efficiently, maintaining adequate local stocks of calibrated instruments and supporting literature.
• Collaborate actively with the Surface Observations Operations team to uphold network-wide quality management practices.
• Respond to urgent land observation site visits to assist in verifying weather and climate records as needed.

Working Conditions & Requirements

This position entails physical tasks, such as transporting and installing meteorological equipment in potentially challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions. Traveling includes overnight stays, sometimes up to four nights per week, and may involve travel by air and sea to remote island locations.

• Annual total compensation up to £49,448, including a base salary of £35,145.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

• Wide-ranging understanding of land observing systems and principles behind manual and automatic meteorological instrumentation.
• Ability to work independently with excellent organizational skills to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
• Flexible approach with readiness to work beyond standard office hours and undertake overnight site visits.
• Strong interpersonal skills to influence, negotiate, and establish productive working relationships with external partners and internal teams.
• Effective communication skills to convey complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
• Physical capability to transport and install equipment across varied terrain and weather conditions.
