Job description
Position Overview
Saint Anselm College, a private liberal arts institution rooted in the Benedictine tradition, is looking to appoint a Resident Director to oversee residence life operations. This is a live-in, full-time professional role spanning 10 months, reporting to either an Area Coordinator or the Director of Residential Life and Education.
Responsibilities
- Manage the overall functioning of a residence hall or area accommodating up to 300 undergraduates, including supervising 8-10 undergraduate resident assistants, the Resident Hall Council, and front desk staff.
- Oversee hall opening and closing procedures and coordinate hall program management.
- Handle facilities management issues, including identifying, addressing, and resolving maintenance, repair, or vandalism concerns.
- Maintain constant communication with supervisors and main office about building operations.
- Supervise room assignments, in-hall staff duties, and conduct regular walkthroughs to ensure building integrity and foster relationships with custodial staff and residents.
- Provide interventions related to disciplinary matters and serve as a Conduct Hearing Officer within the college judicial system.
- Offer counseling, conflict resolution, and referrals to students regarding roommate disputes, facility needs, and campus resources.
- Train, select, and supervise resident assistants, ensuring exemplary behavior and adherence to professional standards.
- Develop and co-lead student development programs, particularly for first-year residential experience, and assist with specialized housing programs including Honors and Substance-Free Housing.
- Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to emergency and crisis situations.
- Coordinate at least two departmental projects each semester, which may include housing operations, RA training/selection, and faculty co-curricular collaborations.
- Serve as a Residential Life representative on Student Development and Mission committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned that align with divisional priorities and personal professional interests.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Prior experience in residence life roles.
- Understanding and commitment to student development, safety, diversity, and social justice principles.
- Respect and familiarity with Catholic higher education traditions.
- Strong verbal and written communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
- Able to work efficiently in fast-paced, high-traffic environments.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, web design and management, and various database applications.
- Availability to work day shifts and fulfill scheduled nightly on-call duties in all weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of counseling, conflict management, and crisis intervention techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in student personnel or a related field.
- Advanced leadership experience in residence life.
- Knowledge of facilities maintenance and custodial services on college campuses.
- Familiarity with college policies and community standards at Saint Anselm College.
