Job description

Position Overview

Join the forefront of space technology as a Radiation Engineer responsible for ensuring the durability and functionality of space electronics under radiation exposure. You'll set radiation parameters, organize and conduct tests, and influence design improvements for advanced optical communication terminals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct radiation environment simulations to identify critical radiation parameters for electronic design compliance.
  • Arrange, oversee, and participate in component and system level radiation testing including Total Ionizing Dose (TID), Proton, and Heavy Ion evaluations.
  • Manage booking of radiation test facilities in coordination with project priorities and complexities.
  • Review complex system and electronic board designs, developing error mitigation and resilience enhancement strategies against radiation effects.
  • Engage in project design assessments and contribute technical insights for next-generation space technology solutions.
  • Prepare comprehensive documentation and test reports, and manage electronic parts databases relevant to radiation assessments.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Professional track record at a mid to senior engineering level focused on radiation effects in electronics, ideally within the space sector.
  • Strong knowledge of space environments and radiation impacts on electronic components and materials.
  • Practical expertise with radiation simulation software such as FASTRAD, SPENVIS, OMERE, CREME96, or related tools; alternatively, experience with conducting or overseeing electrical testing for radiation phenomena like Single Event Effects (SEE), TID, or Total Non-Ionizing Dose (TNID); ideally proficiency in both areas.
  • Proficient in programming languages or environments such as Python, Matlab, and/or LabView for data analytics and test automation purposes.
  • Fundamental understanding of FPGA and microcontroller technologies.
  • Capable of assuming responsibility, coordinating across multiple disciplines, and making informed decisions on complex technical trade-offs.
  • Willingness to travel up to four times annually within Europe for offsite testing activities.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with military and space standards such as MIL-STD-883/750, MIL-HDBK-814, and ECSS guidelines.
  • Previous collaboration with radiation testing facilities.

Alternative Backgrounds Welcome

Candidates with particle or nuclear physics, accelerator or medical physics experience, or backgrounds from research institutions specializing in radiation effects are encouraged to apply, especially if interested in transitioning to space hardware applications.
