About RWWA

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) plays a central role in the vibrant racing community of WA, serving over 24,000 employees. It governs thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing and operates the Western Australian TAB, which includes over 300 retail outlets, a call centre, and online betting platforms. Their mission is to drive profits through the local TAB for the benefit of the racing industry and communities across the state.

Role Overview

The Race Starter is responsible for the secure and smooth initiation of thoroughbred races, trials, and jump outs at metropolitan, provincial, and select country locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct official starting of races, trials, and jump outs aligned with established protocols.
  • Train and accredit starting staff across Western Australia, providing ongoing support.
  • Collaborate with Stewards and industry partners to evaluate and develop starting procedures.
  • Verify horse identities and inspect equipment to ensure compliance before races.
  • Advise Stewards on disciplinary or corrective actions concerning horses.
  • Maintain health and safety standards at starting barriers for all involved.
  • Coordinate with Perth Racing and provincial clubs on adequate barrier staffing for events.
  • Participate in industry forums offering expertise on starting matters.

Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrated extensive experience in a comparable race-starting position.
  • Proven background in thoroughbred horse handling with excellent practical skills in horse care and supervision.
  • Deep knowledge of thoroughbred breed characteristics and related racing equipment.
  • Strong understanding of the racing and wagering sector, including Rules of Racing.
  • Ability to remain composed and control horses and riders during high-pressure moments.
  • Basic proficiency in computer use, especially Microsoft Office and Windows environments.
  • Completion of Year 10 education.
  • Possession of a current Senior First Aid Certificate.
