Job description
Location and Working Model
This position is based remotely within Europe with a requirement for regular physical presence in Bremen, Germany. The work arrangement is a hybrid model combining remote work with on-site collaboration.
Mission
The primary objective is to establish and advance quantum sensing and magnetometry capabilities, focusing on NV-centre systems, optically pumped magnetometry, and precision magnetic sensing. The role involves applying modelling and machine learning techniques to enhance system characterization and development, ultimately driving applied and commercial outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Model, calibrate, and characterize NV-centre and magnetic-field sensor systems.
- Create digital twin models of sensing platforms and validate these models against empirical measurements.
- Leverage machine learning approaches to optimize system bring-up and reduce characterization time.
- Investigate applied sensing applications in biomagnetism, medical diagnostics, and industrial diagnostics.
- Collaborate with the intellectual property team to identify patentable work.
- Evaluate and develop spin-off and licensing opportunities within the organization's ecosystem.
- Publish scientific research and foster collaborations with university faculty and external groups specializing in sensing.
- Contribute to grant proposals related to quantum sensing research.
- Co-supervise master’s students and take part in designing teaching laboratories.
Success Metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Improved sensitivity and reduced calibration times demonstrated on physical systems.
- Patent filings and validation of applied use cases.
- Scientific publications, external collaborations, and supervision of student projects.
Qualifications and Experience
- PhD in physics or a closely related discipline with expertise in NV centres, optically pumped magnetometry, or precision magnetic sensing.
- Experience with pulse sequence development, spin physics, or zero-field NMR.
- Proven capability in hands-on experimental research and system modelling.
- Track record of publishing research findings.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in programming sufficient to develop necessary code independently.
- Strong motivation for both research and practical, commercial applications.
- Excellent scientific communication abilities.
- Adaptability to build new sensing capabilities from the ground up, rather than joining existing teams.
Language Requirements
- Fluent in English for communication and collaboration.
Role Overview
This position offers a unique opportunity to pioneer sensing technologies, encompassing both modelling and experimental elements, with a distinct emphasis on transforming research into intellectual property and commercial products. It is not a traditional academic postdoctoral role nor limited solely to modelling tasks, and it carries a strong focus on commercial relevance.
Minimum education
Doctorate
