This position significantly impacts the resilience, reliability, and economical functioning of the electric power grid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop proposals and define project scopes including conceptual designs and planning execution strategies.
  • Estimate engineering costs, prepare man-hour projections, and schedule timelines.
  • Create detailed engineering drawings for Extra-High Voltage (EHV) projects involving Air Insulated Substations (AIS) and Gas Insulated Substations (GIS).
  • Design protection and control elements, including panel layouts, one-line and three-line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, equipment wiring plans, relay panel wiring diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, and Bill of Materials.
  • Conduct engineering studies such as voltage drop and AC/DC load analyses and produce related calculations and reports.
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and facilitate factory acceptance testing procedures.
  • Coordinate with multiple departments including Civil, Structural, Networks, and Transmission Line teams to ensure integrated designs.
  • Review designs, participate in virtual client meetings, and ensure compliance with technical requirements.
  • Monitor project schedules and collaborate closely with team members to deliver high-quality outcomes on time.
  • Produce detailed substation design packages adhering to client technical standards or industry standards like IES, IEEE, or NESC.
  • Collaborate with global Burns & McDonnell offices and practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and support.
  • Innovate and refine engineering processes, tools, and workflows to enhance design efficiency and project execution.
  • Perform quality reviews of engineering designs and documents to maintain high standards.
  • Exhibit problem-solving abilities through creativity, foresight, and sound judgment.
  • Engage in organizational training and meetings related to company initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 3 to 6 years of relevant experience in substation protection and control engineering.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Familiarity with engineering standards including NESC and IEEE; experience with projects in the US, Canada, or UK is advantageous.
  • Membership in professional engineering bodies such as IET, CIGRE, IEC, or IEEE is preferred.
  • Strong grasp of standard engineering procedures and quantitative problem-solving methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and strong computer literacy.
  • Possess foundational knowledge of substation automation systems adhering to IEC61850 standards.
  • Desirable understanding of relay and control/protection scheme testing.
  • Considered knowledge in AutoCAD Electrical and 3D Substation Design software suites.
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, teamwork, and problem-solving competencies.
