Job description

About Mercury

Mercury is a visionary organisation focused on the future, providing energy and telecommunications services to more New Zealanders than any other company. It leads in renewable energy development and is committed to creating a sustainable future. The core mission is to safeguard tomorrow by connecting people and places today, driving efforts to build a better future for communities and the nation.

Role Overview

This Project Manager role involves leading and successfully delivering key projects within Mercury's Generation business. You'll manage multi-year programmes including protection system upgrades, safety instrumentation enhancements, critical asset renewals, and preparatory work for major rehabilitation initiatives. Collaborating closely with operational, engineering, and specialist teams, you will contribute to improving the safety, dependability, and efficiency of renewable generation assets powering New Zealand communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead projects from initial planning stages through to final handover.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, contractors, and delivery partners to ensure safe and successful project outcomes.
  • Manage all aspects of project scope, scheduling, budgeting, risk, and reporting.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will bring proven project delivery experience and the ability to navigate technical, commercial, and stakeholder environments effectively. You should possess:

  • A relevant tertiary or trade qualification in engineering, project management, or a related technical area, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Familiarity with applicable AS/NZS standards and experience in regulated technical or operational settings.
  • Strong skills in communication, influencing, and relationship management.
  • Commercial acumen with the capability to balance safety, quality, costs, timelines, and stakeholder needs.

Electrical engineering background is preferred, particularly with exposure to high-voltage systems, energy sectors, utilities, industrial or infrastructure projects. Experience with commissioning, testing, operational readiness, and project handover will be advantageous.

Benefits and Perks

  • An additional five MyDays (leave days) per year.
  • A one-time $400 tax-free payment to assist with home office setup.
  • Exclusive discounts on electricity and telecommunications bills for Mercury customers.
  • A diverse and inclusive workplace that values unique talents and abilities.
  • Annual salary reviews and generous parental leave policies, including options to purchase additional leave.
  • Career development opportunities with one of New Zealand's largest multi-utility providers.
  • Flexible working arrangements allowing autonomy and trust to work from office or home.
  • Discounted health insurance, plus free life and income protection insurance.
  • Comprehensive wellbeing programmes, including up to $100 annually for health check-ups and confidential assistance.
  • Inclusive leave provisions such as gender affirmation leave and supportive bereavement leave that includes loss of pets.

Additional Information

Mercury is committed to continuous learning and development, offering opportunities to enhance skillsets and mindsets within an energised, innovative, and agile environment. The organisation embraces diversity and encourages applications from candidates with varying backgrounds and experiences, even if not all criteria are fully met.

Applications close Wednesday 2nd September at 5:00pm and may be reviewed as they come in, with interviews starting before the deadline. Early applications are encouraged as the vacancy may close once sufficient suitable candidates are found.
