Process Safety Engineer

About the Role

The Process Safety Engineer will work under the direction of the Head of Safety and Loss Prevention Senior Engineer to implement and maintain the Process Safety Management (PSM) system at QAFCO. This key role involves collaborating with operational and technical teams to conduct and support various Process Safety Risk assessments for both ongoing operations and projects. Activities include facilitating Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) studies such as HAZOP, Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments, Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Major Hazard Analysis/Direct Hazard Analysis (MHA/DHA), Dispersion Studies, and safety case development. The engineer will ensure compliance with relevant health, quality, safety, and environmental policies.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure promotion and adherence to QAFCO’s Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental, Quality, Responsible Care Management Systems, Product Stewardship, and PSM standards.
• Support the Head of Safety and Loss Prevention Senior Engineer in developing documentation and activities for monitoring and following up on the PSM system.
• Create and maintain company-wide Process Safety Specifications and Standards applicable across projects and operational assets.
• Collaborate with operational and technical teams to uphold Process Safety Management standards and compliance.
• Apply recognized standards, technical requirements, and sound engineering practices to guarantee projects and operations conform to established process safety criteria.
• Lead initiatives that update and devise process safety requirements and procedures throughout the organization.
• Provide specifications and evaluate equipment and service procurement bids to ensure adherence to process safety standards, recommending preferred suppliers accordingly.
• Coordinate Process Safety group activities and lead awareness campaigns to promote process safety culture within the company.
• Work with leadership to set short and long-term process safety objectives, strategies, targets, and measurement frameworks prioritizing risk mitigation and action plans.
• Develop, implement, and track leading process safety performance indicators on a weekly and monthly basis.
• Prepare and review regular reports on Process Safety Management progress and metrics.
• Lead and participate in process safety incident investigations, determine root causes, and ensure corrective action plans and lessons learned are communicated and enforced to prevent recurrence.
• Contribute to recommending process modifications to reduce identified hazards and comply with risk reduction goals.
• Stay updated on technological advances and best practices relevant to process safety to improve effectiveness and reduce costs.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with a preference for Chemical Engineering.
• Certifications such as NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety, Process Safety Management, Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis, Process Hazard Analysis are highly advantageous.
• At least 8 years of proven professional experience in process safety roles, preferably within the Fertilizer, Petrochemical, or Oil & Gas sectors.
• Strong supervisory capabilities with good understanding of process safety codes, standards, and best practices.
• Possesses sound engineering judgment with an aptitude for hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies.
• Highly attentive to detail, proactive, well-organized, and analytical with practical engineering knowledge.
• Proficient with common PC applications.
• Excellent English communication skills, including technical report writing.
