Overview
The Process Safety Engineer will support the Head of Safety and Loss Prevention Senior Engineer in executing the Process Safety Management System across the organization. Acting as a vital member of the Process Safety team, this role will engage closely with operations and technical teams to facilitate risk assessments and safety studies for both ongoing operations and new projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Champion and adhere to QAFCO's health, safety, environment, quality, and product stewardship management systems including Process Safety Management (PSM) protocols.
- Assist in drafting, implementing, and monitoring documentation and activities related to the Process Safety Management system.
- Develop process safety standards and specifications applicable throughout company projects and operational assets.
- Collaborate with operational and technical departments to ensure full compliance with PSM requirements.
- Apply relevant technical standards and sound engineering practices to safeguard operations and projects against process safety risks.
- Lead the company-wide initiative to update and maintain process safety-related policies and procedures.
- Define specifications for procurement ensuring alignment with process safety needs and evaluate supplier bids to recommend optimal options.
- Coordinate the Process Safety group’s activities and lead awareness campaigns promoting process safety culture within the company.
- Work with leadership to set both short- and long-term process safety goals, strategies, and performance targets designed to mitigate risks.
- Establish and track key performance indicators—especially leading indicators—to assess Process Safety Management progress through weekly and monthly reporting.
- Take an active role in facilitating various Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) methodologies, including HAZOP, SIL, QRA, LOPA, FMEA, MHA/DHA, dispersion, and safety case studies.
- Plan and coordinate safety activities with operational and project teams ensuring timely, cost-effective, and specification-compliant completion.
- Lead and participate in investigations on process safety incidents to identify root causes and implement preventive action plans to eliminate recurrence.
- Contribute to recommendations for process modifications to minimize hazards and achieve risk reduction goals effectively.
- Stay updated on the latest technological advancements and best practices in process safety to enhance efficacy and reduce costs.
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with preference for Chemical Engineering.
- Relevant certifications such as NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety, Process Safety Management, Incident Investigations & Root Cause Analysis, and Process Hazard Analysis are advantageous.
- At least 8 years of substantial experience in process safety within the Fertilizer, Petrochemical, or Oil & Gas sectors.
- Strong supervisory capabilities and familiarity with process safety codes, standards, and recommended practices.
- Good engineering judgment with a keen attention to detail, proactiveness, organizational skills, and analytical thinking.
- Proficient in standard PC software applications.
- Effective English communication and technical report writing skills are essential.
