Overview

The Privacy Data Protection Office (PDPO) drives privacy and data protection efforts throughout TikTok's global product ecosystem by collaborating with engineering, product, legal, compliance, and data governance teams. The objective is to identify privacy risks and guarantee user data is managed safely, responsibly, and uniformly.

We are developing a robust infrastructure addressing data retention, classification, and database storage to mitigate significant data protection risks. Our governance capabilities are evolving alongside the construction of platforms and engineering tools that deliver objective, data-driven insights into protection mechanisms' effectiveness from an audit perspective.

Role Purpose

The Privacy Validation Engineering team focuses on creating automated, intelligent verification systems that evaluate the implementation of data protection policies and controls across the technology stack. By validating system behavior against privacy requirements, the team identifies systemic risks, strengthens privacy governance, and supplies actionable insights to engineering teams. The current priority involves comprehensive validation of data retention policies spanning products, backend services, databases, and data platforms.

Responsibilities

• Develop automated and intelligent verification systems to assess adherence to data protection policies across TikTok’s technology infrastructure.
• Design and implement complete verification processes for data protection, initially emphasizing data retention throughout data collection, transmission, storage, processing, and deletion stages.
• Create automated validation capabilities focusing on end-to-end data retention verification to verify policy compliance.
• Design, develop, and conduct functional testing of privacy features across iOS/Android mobile applications, web frontend, backend services, and data processing pipelines.
• Develop test automation tools, validation instruments, and internal frameworks/platforms, working alongside automation and performance testing teams to enhance testing productivity, coverage, and scalability across diverse technology stacks.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, legal, compliance, and data governance teams to gather privacy governance facts, identify systemic risks, and deliver actionable insights to enhance privacy protections and project quality.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems and core data protection concepts such as encryption, access control, auditing, and data handling, coupled with knowledge of frontend-backend-data interactions.
• Hands-on testing experience covering multiple layers of technology, including frontend, backend, and data/infrastructure, without required specialization in a single area.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills capable of diagnosing issues across systems and identifying potential privacy and data protection vulnerabilities.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities to coordinate with globally distributed teams including engineering, legal, compliance, and data governance stakeholders.
• Keen interest in privacy protection and comprehensive quality assurance to ensure secure, consistent handling of user data across the technology ecosystem.
• Familiarity with technologies such as Redis, NSQ, ZeroMQ, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes (K8s), Hive, and Spark is a plus.
• Experience related to data validation, data pipelines, distributed systems, cross-system data consistency, privacy engineering, security testing, data governance, or compliance technology is advantageous.
