Principal Structural Engineer - Residential & Medium Density

About the Role

This position is for a Principal Structural Engineer with expertise in residential and medium-density construction, based in Brisbane, Queensland. The role offers a competitive annual base salary ranging from $160,000 to $200,000, plus superannuation, a quarterly bonus opportunity of 5% of the base salary, an additional 5% bonus linked to company performance, and eligibility for equity after twelve months. Equity involves buying shares at a discount, which pay dividends from company profits, providing an ongoing financial stake in the business.

This is a well-established engineering company specializing in residential and medium-density projects, supported by interstate operations and seeking leadership to expand its Queensland presence.

Responsibilities

As the technical authority in Queensland for housing projects, you will report directly to the state General Manager. The scope covers single and double-storey homes, townhouses, small warehouses, three-storey custom designs, and staged residential village developments that progress over longer periods.

You will be the go-to expert for on-site issues, capability to prioritize critical technical decisions and communicate solutions clearly to builders and stakeholders. Your expertise will also contribute to shaping company-wide design standards and methodologies.

The role involves mentoring a junior team primarily composed of engineers in the early stages of their careers, fostering their growth and establishing effective work practices. A separate leadership position handles day-to-day personnel management, allowing you to focus on technical leadership.

Working Conditions

The work environment is fast-paced; single-storey designs are expected to be completed within three days, with intensified activity at month-end to meet construction deadlines. Approximately 80% of work is office-based to facilitate on-the-job learning through close collaboration.

Flexibility in work hours is genuine but variable, including options like leaving early for personal commitments, working remotely during school holidays, or adjusting start and finish times as needed.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has a strong background in residential and medium-density structural engineering, with effective communication skills to liaise with builders, general managers, estimators, and sales teams. Self-management skills including planning, prioritization, and foresight are essential.

Possession of RPEQ registration is preferred; candidates without RPEQ or CPEng qualifications will be supported through a fast-track accreditation program. A genuine interest and commitment to housing projects is necessary, as this role does not focus on infrastructure like bridges or high-rise buildings.
