Overview
Join Resideo's Innovation team as a Principal Software Engineer in an R&D capacity to develop next-generation software platforms that enable smart, connected home experiences. This role is highly technical and hands-on, centered around building foundational edge computing runtimes and integration platforms that comprehend device data, model home spatial and occupancy information, and deliver that intelligence to applications and smart agents.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and architect core components of advanced edge computing and spatial intelligence systems.
- Develop an edge runtime platform that integrates data and functionalities from various connected home devices.
- Construct rich software models representing device and home information for use by edge apps, mobile interfaces, and intelligent agents.
- Take complex technical challenges through prototyping and implementation, enabling rapid learning and iteration.
- Assess and select technologies and architectures with consideration for scalability, reliability, performance, portability, and maintainability.
- Lead technically by providing architectural guidance, code and design reviews, and enforcing robust software engineering practices.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams spanning IoT systems, embedded firmware, mobile, and innovation.
- Contribute strategically to R&D planning by identifying promising opportunities, shaping concepts, and driving project initiation.
- Mentor engineering staff and foster a culture centered on collaborative experimentation and quality execution.
Required Qualifications
- 10 or more years of professional technology experience with hands-on development in compiled languages such as Rust, C, C++, or Go.
- Background in software systems engineering disciplines including databases, operating systems, compilers, networking, cybersecurity, or virtualization, focusing on foundational technologies.
- Experience in advanced R&D or prototyping environments involving exploratory technology development.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Excellent communication skills for articulating technical needs, architectural decisions, and tradeoffs.
- Track record of transforming prototypes into fully realized products.
- Rust programming experience or strong interest to attain proficiency.
- Expertise in building core software infrastructure such as databases, OS, compilers, runtimes, network stacks, protocols, etc.
- Networking and network protocol development experience.
- Cybersecurity or secure systems development background.
- Familiarity with edge computing, distributed or resource-constrained systems.
- Knowledge of semantic technologies including knowledge graphs, ontologies, or relationship modeling techniques.
- Development or integration of intelligent agents or agent-based systems.
- Experience with IoT platforms and connected device ecosystems.
- Embedded Linux experience (e.g., Yocto) or developing on embedded RTOS platforms.
- Proficiency in asynchronous programming paradigms.
- Experience with containerization, WebAssembly, virtualization, or application portability technologies.
- End-to-end development of platform software.
- Strong software quality assurance, testing, version control, and continuous integration practices.
- Experience using major cloud platforms (Resideo utilizes Azure).
- Ability to learn from previous technical and architectural efforts and apply insights to future designs.
- Agility in shifting between exploration and implementation phases, adapting processes to advance progress.
- Self-motivated with active involvement in team planning and technical discussions.

Location: 6 Apollo Drive, Rosedale, North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand. This is an on-site role.
