Principal Software Engineer

About the Role

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will collaborate closely with McKinsey's Social, Healthcare and Public Entities (SHaPE) analytics teams across various international technology hubs, spanning the US, Europe, India, and Costa Rica. SHaPE Tech combines cutting-edge analytics, software development, and sector-specific expertise to engineer breakthrough technology solutions for social, public, and healthcare sectors globally. Utilizing over 100 terabytes of integrated claims, clinical, consumer, and healthcare data, you will help design, build, and sustain advanced analytical tools and software platforms tailored for impactful outcomes.

Responsibilities

In this leadership position, you will guide the creation of scalable technological assets, mentor and inspire junior engineers, and develop a clear architectural vision to tackle complex technical challenges. Collaborating with a broad array of experts, you will drive innovation, elevate system performance, and cultivate high-performing, self-organizing teams using Agile methodologies. You will ensure engineering excellence through clean architectural principles, reusable components, adherence to coding standards, and comprehensive design reviews, guaranteeing applications meet enterprise benchmarks for security, scalability, observability, reliability, and performance.

Your duties will also entail forming and executing technical roadmaps, transforming business goals into scalable engineering solutions, leading cloud migration and modernization initiatives, and partnering with DevOps and Platform Engineering teams to deploy cloud-native applications with containerization technologies. Additionally, you will architect and optimize continuous integration and deployment pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and release workflows. Your efforts will support McKinsey’s transition toward asset-based consulting, expanding its entrepreneurial culture by delivering reusable core components and scalable, high-quality software solutions addressing multifaceted client problems.

Qualifications and Skills

• Possess an advanced degree in computer science, machine learning, applied statistics, mathematics, or related fields, or demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
• Have at least eight years of relevant experience in software engineering.
• Proven track record delivering full-stack applications with code that is maintainable, readable, scalable, and testable.
• Comprehensive knowledge and hands-on expertise across the entire application stack, employing various programming languages and frameworks.
• Proficiency with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience collaborating with internal clients, adapting to variable requirements based on differing use cases.
• Agile team experience, actively engaging in sprint ceremonies and collaborative development practices such as pair programming.
• Strong teamwork abilities, effectively interfacing with both technical and non-technical stakeholders within software teams.
• Familiarity with technologies like Java, JavaScript, R, Python, and SQL as commonly utilized within the team.
• Outstanding time management skills to handle complex responsibilities autonomously.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and local office languages, with the capacity to tailor communication styles to diverse audiences and seniority levels.
