Principal Planner Resource Consents

Overview

Join Nelson City Council as a Principal Planner within the Resource Consents team and contribute significantly to the sustainable growth of the Nelson region. This role offers an opportunity to lead technical planning, influence continuous improvements, and provide expert advice on complex resource consent applications.

Role Details

As a Principal Planner, you will serve as a technical leader, handling complex consent applications, mentoring team members, and fostering strong relationships with stakeholders. Alternatively, depending on experience, Senior Planner roles are available, focusing on processing diverse consents, providing guidance, and engaging with community stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and progress resource consent applications of varying complexity.
• Provide specialist knowledge and leadership in the resource consents area.
• Mentor and develop planning staff to enhance their professional growth.
• Drive continuous improvement projects to refine processes and documentation.
• Deliver expert planning advice both internally and externally.
• Prepare and present expert witness evidence at hearings and Environment Court.
• Collaborate on cross-Council projects, policies, and strategies.
• Support and occasionally act in the Team Leader role within the department.

Required Experience and Skills

• Proven experience managing a broad range of resource consent applications.
• Comprehensive understanding of the Resource Management Act and related legislation.
• Experience with consent hearings and familiarity with the Making Good Decisions framework.
• Capability in preparing and presenting expert witness testimony.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship management skills.
• Effective organizational, prioritization, and time management abilities.
• Collaborative work ethic and dedication to continuous improvement.
• Preferred experience in leading or mentoring planning professionals.
• Relevant university degree in planning, resource management, science, or a related field.
• Membership or eligibility for membership in a recognized professional planning body is desirable.
