Role Overview

The Principal FPGA Engineer is a senior technical authority responsible for the design, development, and enhancement of FPGA-based systems critical to equities trading technology. This role focuses on market connectivity, data processing, protocol acceleration, and latency-sensitive workflows, acting as a trusted technical advisor influencing architecture, engineering standards, and strategic direction of FPGA and hardware-accelerated technologies within the trading platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop FPGA architectures and solutions supporting trading platforms, including review and governance processes.
  • Drive continuous innovation through reusable design frameworks and engineering best practices.
  • Analyze and optimize latency-critical workflows, protocol processing, and connectivity for enhanced platform performance.
  • Provide expertise in performance benchmarking and capacity planning.
  • Lead strategic technical advisory, influencing roadmap and investment decisions related to hardware acceleration technologies.
  • Establish and uphold engineering standards, design principles, and quality benchmarks for low-latency hardware and software integration.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including software engineering, network, infrastructure, operations, and external vendors.
  • Engage in contribution to industry forums and maintain knowledge of emerging trends.
  • Mentor engineers and guide teams to uphold rigorous engineering discipline focused on deterministic, high-performance computing.
  • Ensure FPGA solutions meet security, operational resilience, and supportability standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience in FPGA development or engineering for low-latency platforms.
  • Demonstrated track record of designing and deploying FPGA solutions in production environments.
  • Experience leading complex technical projects and shaping architecture strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of high-performance and distributed computing systems.

Specialist Technical Skills

  • Proficient in FPGA design and implementation methodologies.
  • Expertise with hardware description languages such as VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog.
  • Experience with high-speed networking and low-latency market infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with protocol processing and hardware/software co-design.
  • Competence in real-time deterministic systems and system performance benchmarking.
  • Comfortable in Linux environments and systems programming.

Desirable Attributes

  • Background in exchange, trading, market data, or financial services sectors.
  • In-depth understanding of market connectivity technologies and exchange infrastructure like matching engines.
  • Additional advanced engineering qualifications or industry recognition in relevant specialties.

  • Though not a direct manager, acts as a technical leader and mentor fostering best practices and standards across teams.
