This includes ensuring that designs for substations, transformers, switchgear, and related high-voltage infrastructure adhere strictly to National Grid/DNO engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate P&C design submissions for compliance with relevant policies, procedures, and engineering standards.
  • Provide comprehensive feedback to address any design deficiencies, compliance issues, or potential risks.

  • Engage collaboratively with internal teams including asset management and project delivery to align designs with project goals.
  • Participate actively in design coordination meetings, workshops, and technical evaluations with contractors and suppliers.
  • Recognize and mitigate design-related risks concerning safety, reliability, and performance; recommend corrective measures.
  • Ensure risk mitigation integrates hazard identification (HAZID) and risk assessment processes.
  • Implement safety by design principles and demonstrate awareness of Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations.
  • Maintain detailed records of design submissions, reviews, and approvals.
  • Prepare technical reports and assurance documents for stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor and report on design quality and compliance outcomes to management.
  • Experience working within structured project design processes.

Qualifications

  • Essential: HNC or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in Protection & Control design, assurance, or technical approval within the Electricity Transmission or DNO sectors.
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage infrastructure components such as substations, transformers, switchgear, and HV cable systems.
  • Desirable: Chartered Engineer status or progression towards CEng accreditation.
  • Experience producing, reviewing, and approving National Grid and/or DNO project designs.
  • Previous or current authorization as National Grid BP141 Design Assurance Engineer.
  • Nomination as BP137 Contractor Design Approval Engineer for National Grid projects is advantageous.
