Job description
About the Role
Addible is a company focused on green chemistry innovations, specializing in creating sustainable chemical technologies. We have developed TMO2, a new oxidizing agent that is patent-pending. Our R&D team, based in Kildare, includes experts such as Professor James Clark, a pioneer in green chemistry globally. This position offers the unique opportunity to work on polymer synthesis, materials development, polymer dispersions for industrial clients, and our core oxidation chemistry research.
As one of two researchers in a compact and expanding laboratory, you will work closely alongside the Senior Scientist and company directors, taking significant responsibility for designing and executing your own experimental projects. Your work will directly impact the company's scientific progress.
Most of your time will be spent performing hands-on experimental work in the lab, supported by thorough literature review, data evaluation, and detailed reporting.
Main Responsibilities
- Design and perform experiments focused on polymer synthesis including step-growth and polycondensation polymers, and materials development.
- Develop and characterize polymer emulsions and dispersions.
- Support the advancement of our oxidation chemistry technologies.
- Use Design of Experiments (DoE) methodologies to plan tests and analyze results effectively.
- Characterize materials and develop quantitative analytical methods, such as GC-MS; interpret data accurately and maintain comprehensive laboratory records and reproducible protocols.
- Prepare regular technical updates for management and detailed reports for clients and funding bodies.
- Collaborate with clients, academic partners, and third-party analytical services.
- Share responsibilities related to laboratory safety, cleanliness, inventory management, and equipment maintenance.
- Stay current with scientific literature and relevant patents.
- Adapt work efforts across lab experiments, desk research, and project management as required.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- PhD in chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials science, or closely related fields; alternatively, a Master's degree combined with significant industry experience.
- Extensive practical experience in polymer synthesis and materials chemistry.
- Familiarity with characterization techniques including NMR, FTIR, GPC, GC-MS, and thermal analysis methods such as DSC and TGA.
- Strong commitment to safe laboratory practices and safety protocols.
- Proficient written and oral communication skills, able to produce technical reports for clients.
- Ability to manage laboratory work independently and maintain reproducible documentation.
- Possession of a full driving license and private transportation, as the role requires regular travel to partner sites, including university instrumentation centers; limited public transport options exist at the company location.
- Confirmed right to work in Ireland without need for work permit sponsorship.
Preferred Attributes
- Enthusiasm for green chemistry and principles of sustainability.
- Understanding of regulatory standards such as REACH.
- Background knowledge of oxidation chemistry and safe handling of peroxides.
- Experience working with bio-based polymers or polyesters.
- Industrial R&D, process development, or scale-up experience.
- Competency with Design of Experiments and associated software.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary range of €42,000 to €48,000, based on qualifications and experience.
- Enrollment option in the company PRSA scheme.
- 20 days paid annual leave plus public holidays.
- Support for continuing education including training and conference attendance.
- An opportunity to influence the scientific direction and growth of a small, ambitious green chemistry firm.
