Platform API Engineer

Job Overview

We are looking to hire a Platform API Engineer responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable APIs and backend services that empower engineering teams to create new products and functionalities. This role suits an experienced backend developer with strong expertise in Ruby on Rails and API development who enjoys tackling complex backend challenges and delivering reliable, maintainable API solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain scalable backend services and APIs using Ruby on Rails.
• Create and improve RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs supporting applications and product features.
• Design clean, consistent API contracts and robust backend architecture.
• Implement integrations with internal systems and third-party platforms.
• Work extensively with relational databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL.
• Enhance API performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Implement automated testing and uphold high code quality standards.
• Diagnose and resolve issues in production backend services and APIs.
• Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and other developers to deliver complete solutions.
• Contribute to technical design discussions, code reviews, and make key architectural decisions.
• Maintain comprehensive API documentation and development best practices.
• Lead technical projects from planning through to delivery.

Required Qualifications

• Proven professional experience with Ruby on Rails development.
• Hands-on expertise in designing and building production-grade REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
• In-depth understanding of API design principles, backend architectures, and solid software engineering practices.
• Experience managing relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Track record of developing and supporting backend systems in production environments.
• Familiarity with automated testing and contemporary development methodologies.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities for troubleshooting backend issues.
• Effective collaboration with frontend, product, and engineering teams.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to independently own technical initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with large-scale or complex API platforms.
• Knowledge of API authentication and authorization mechanisms such as OAuth or JWT.
• Familiarity with background jobs or event-driven system architectures.
• Experience working with technologies like Redis, Kafka, Sidekiq, or Elasticsearch.
• Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
• Experience in API documentation and developer tooling.
• Ability to build platform services utilized by multiple engineering teams.
• Background in microservices or distributed system development.
