Phlebotomist

Overview

This role involves comprehensive responsibilities in blood sample collection and handling, ensuring patient safety and accuracy in test requests from initial preparation through to sample delivery and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Understand test requests thoroughly and resolve any issues related to the requests.
• Communicate effectively with patients regarding preparation requirements per the primary sample manual.
• Take utmost care to prevent pre-analytical errors during sample collection as outlined in the collection protocols.
• Ensure correct patient identification following established phlebotomy procedures.
• Adhere strictly to phlebotomy guidelines during blood sample collection.
• Clearly communicate the phlebotomy process to patients.
• Choose an appropriate site and method for blood collection according to test needs and patient condition.
• Transport collected samples within a suitable timeframe according to test requirements.
• Verify proper identification of samples before submitting them to the respective sections.
• Provide relevant information on collection method, site, and any difficulties encountered to technical staff.
• Maintain documentation for request receipt time, sample collection, delivery to sections, and record any sample rejections with reasons.
• Transfer prepared samples to reception from sections for outsourcing purposes.
• Collect samples from patients' homes and referring laboratories, coordinate sending samples and related records to reference labs for external testing.
• Collect payments from patients for home visits and from referring labs for inter-laboratory services.
• Uphold quality assurance standards in the phlebotomy department.
• Foster a healthy, professional work environment in the department.
• Execute re-collection orders promptly when directed by the sections.
