Job description

About Chore

Chore supports US startup founders by managing back office functions such as human resources, payroll, finance, and compliance, enabling founders to focus on growing their companies. We value efficiency, transparency, professionalism, inclusiveness, autonomy, trust, and a culture of continuous learning and fun.

Role Overview

The Operations Manager is a key position responsible for overseeing the back office operations of various client startups. This role involves direct collaboration with US startup founders to manage vital operational tasks including HR, finance, payroll, and compliance. While you will not manage a team, you will coordinate and ensure seamless operation across multiple client accounts concurrently, each with unique systems, deadlines, and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day back office operations tactically, applying judgment in tasks such as coordinating with accountants for tax filings and handling NDAs with customers.
  • Develop strategic insights for clients on matters like compensation benchmarks as relationships deepen.
  • Research solutions for unusual or unprecedented issues, including regulatory challenges and vendor communication gaps.
  • Evaluate and recommend cost-effective tools and vendors suited for early-stage, budget-conscious startups.
  • Contribute to building and maintaining a knowledge base of best practices that minimizes repetitive problem-solving efforts across HR, finance, and legal operations.
  • Lead internal projects aimed at enhancing Chore’s systems, SOPs, dashboards, and operational processes.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years experience dealing directly with clients or external partners, with accountability for delivering outcomes.
  • Proactive problem-solving mindset: escalate issues with recommendations and initiate solutions when necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information clearly and professionally to founders.

Preferable but not mandatory:

  • Experience in startups or back office functions like HR, payroll, finance, or compliance.
  • Understanding of bookkeeping, accounting, or early-stage startup finances.
  • Familiarity with productivity tools such as ClickUp, Slack, Notion, and Google Suite.

Ideal Traits

  • A passion for optimizing processes and improving efficiency continuously.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities calmly under pressure.
  • Willingness to undertake foundational tasks essential to startups, including regulatory follow-ups and employee offboarding.
  • An enthusiasm for leveraging AI and technology to enhance productivity proactively.
  • Commitment to building deep, trusting relationships with multiple clients across industries.
  • Openness to giving and receiving feedback constructively using Radical Candor.
  • Desire for long-term engagement, ideally 2+ years, with potential career growth within the company.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary of $14,000 USD for Nigeria/Africa with quarterly bonuses up to 30% based on performance.
  • Equity grants for all team members, with additional awards for tenure and performance.
  • Monthly stipends: up to $250 for work-from-home expenses and up to $50 for wellness.
  • Fully remote work location; must be available during US Eastern or Pacific time business hours.

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Consistent availability to work US business hours is mandatory.
  • Reliable internet connection, power backup, and a quiet workspace are essential for remote work success.
  • The role requires juggling multiple clients and priorities with high autonomy and minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort with receiving and providing frequent feedback are crucial.
  • This is a demanding role requiring ownership, quick decision-making, and client-facing pressure management.

Values

  • Prioritize delighting all stakeholders by making work smoother, clearer, and more thoughtful.
  • Operate under a meritocratic system valuing impactful contributions over tenure.
  • Encourage experimentation, rapid learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Assume positive intent, embrace feedback, fix issues proactively, and amplify team effectiveness.
