Job description
About DCAS and FMC
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) plays a vital role in supporting over 80 City agencies by managing key assets and services, such as public buildings and procurement of billions in goods annually. Facilities Management & Construction (FMC), a subdivision of DCAS, oversees the daily operations and maintenance of 56 City-owned buildings across New York's boroughs, ensuring safe, clean, and energy-efficient public spaces.
Position Overview
As an Oiler, you'll be responsible for lubricating mechanical components like power plants, pumps, engines, compressors, and other equipment crucial for operational efficiency. Under supervision, you'll perform lubrication tasks, clean machinery parts, assist in maintenance and repair, monitor equipment gauges, maintain logs, handle lubricant inventories, and may operate lubricant filtering systems or vehicles as needed.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The role requires attention to detail for reading instruments, vocal communication amid noise, and physical agility like climbing stairs and walking on slippery surfaces. You may work in confined spaces with exposure to combustion gases, grease odors, dust, heights, and heavy objects up to 60 pounds. Responsibility for maintaining equipment in compliance with greenhouse gas emissions regulations and energy codes is also expected. Obtaining a fire safety director’s certification is recommended.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least three years of full-time experience involving lubrication, maintenance, and repairs of mechanical machinery; or
- One and a half years of such experience paired with graduation from an approved trade or technical high school or completion of an internship program; or
- One year of relevant experience along with an associate degree in mechanical technology from an accredited institution.
Additional Opportunities and Requirements
- This position is open to qualified candidates under the 55-a Program for persons with disabilities; candidates should indicate interest in consideration through this program.
- City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment, with some allowances for continuous employees.
Diversity and Equal Opportunity
