Job description

About Africa Women Development Initiative

Africa Women Development Initiative is a Ugandan women-led organization focused on enhancing the wellbeing of women and girls through education, vocational skills, and economic empowerment. The organization facilitates women-led small businesses like piggery, poultry, agriculture, and retail, and provides tailoring and weaving training to out-of-school girls. It works in partnership with local communities, schools, and leaders to ensure basic education completion by children, including teen mothers and those with learning challenges. A special emphasis is placed on expanding health and education access for children with learning disabilities, a typically underserved group. Active since 2010, the initiative aims to foster lasting resilience and wellbeing for women, girls, and families.

Role Overview

The Nutritionist will serve as an on-site full-time team member in Uganda, promoting health among women, teen mothers, and children in the communities served. Key duties include assessing nutritional requirements, crafting personalized and group dietary plans, and offering guidance on balanced diets, weight control, and nutrition across life stages. The Nutritionist will conduct educational sessions, workshops, and counseling tailored to local needs, collaborate with program staff to incorporate nutrition into economic and school programs, and document intervention results. The role requires partnership with health providers, schools, and community leaders to reinforce nutrition education at the community level.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Extensive practical knowledge in nutrition and dietetics, including nutritional assessments and culturally sensitive meal planning.
  • Experience in nutritional counseling and weight management for varied demographics including women and children.
  • Proficiency in designing and leading nutrition education programs, workshops, and community talks.
  • Academic credentials such as a diploma or degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, or related disciplines.
  • Background working in community or NGO environments, preferably in under-resourced or rural settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for respectful engagement with diverse multilingual and multicultural groups.
  • Competency in program data collection and outcome monitoring to support clear reporting.
  • Desirable: fluency in local Ugandan languages and in-depth familiarity with local dietary traditions and food systems.
