Network Engineer, Operations & Support

Overview

The Edge & Network Services team at Meta is charged with deploying and supporting production networks globally, covering Edge, Backbone, Optical, and Data Center infrastructure. This role involves hands-on engineering focused on Backbone network operations, ensuring the network's reliability, scalability, and performance that connects billions worldwide. Collaboration with various teams to implement network deployments, foster operational excellence, and evolve worldwide network standards is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and verify production network equipment such as switches, routers, and optical transport devices across data center and edge locations.
• Provide daily operational support for site network services, resolving routing and switching protocol challenges involving BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, and RSVP-TE.
• Organize and perform planned maintenance, including hardware upgrades, software updates, and decommissioning network assets.
• Maintain precise documentation including as-built diagrams, asset listings, and configuration files pertaining to all network and physical infrastructure.
• Work closely with network design and architecture teams to execute scalable deployment standards and develop enhanced site service options.
• Assist with testing and validating new hardware and software prior to production deployment.
• Liaise with vendors and facilities staff to oversee structured cabling, fiber-optic systems, and physical infrastructure dependencies at production sites.
• Participate in an on-call rotation providing 24/7 responsiveness to network incidents and infrastructure support.
• Identify and implement automation and AI-driven tools to streamline deployment procedures, minimize manual tasks, and enhance operational consistency.
• Support team goals by sharing insights, documenting best practices, and advising cross-functional partners on complex networking issues.

Minimum Qualifications

• Over 6 years of experience deploying, configuring, and managing large-scale production networks.
• Hands-on familiarity with physical network infrastructure including structured cabling and fiber optics in data center environments.
• Experience in diverse, multi-vendor network environments with enterprise or hyperscale networking hardware.
• Competence with network protocols such as TCP/UDP, DHCP, DNS, plus expertise in IPv4 and IPv6 environments.
• Proficient in troubleshooting and configuring routing and switching protocols including BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, RSVP-TE, and VRRP.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ongoing skill development in AI technologies, including prompt engineering and agent orchestration.
• Field experience in network operations at data centers, colocation facilities, internet exchanges, or central offices.
• Proven ability to apply AI tools to redesign workflows yielding efficiency gains and quality improvements.
• Experience with scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or similar for enhancing deployment and operational processes.
• Familiarity with ethical AI principles such as risk assessment, bias reduction, and quality control.
• Use of AI tools to optimize network operations, achieving measurable impacts like reduced deployment time and improved documentation accuracy.
• Knowledge of 40G/100G Ethernet and optical transport technologies such as CWDM and DWDM.
