Job description
Company Overview
Homhero specializes in cloud-based software solutions designed for managers of short-term rental properties. Their platform integrates booking, availability, pricing, guest communication, cleaning schedules, owner reporting, and connectivity with major channels such as Booking.com, Airbnb, and VRBO. Although based on the Gold Coast, the company embraces remote work for candidates in compatible time zones (AEST).
Role Overview
This position involves leading the development and stewardship of Homhero's React Native application. A significant portion of the product currently operates on a legacy PHP core with a Sencha frontend; however, the strategic direction is to retire this in favor of a modernized stack comprising a NestJS and TypeScript backend with a React frontend. The developer's duties will straddle both old and new technologies with an increasing focus on the fresh stack over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain the React Native mobile application, focusing on architecture, features, and performance.
- Oversee the full app release lifecycle including App Store and Google Play submissions, signing, provisioning, review troubleshooting, and controlled rollouts.
- Utilize Expo and EAS for builds, submissions, and over-the-air updates, making informed decisions on when to leverage or bypass Expo.
- Collaborate closely with the lead product designer to build and evolve a shared UI component library for both mobile and React web frontends, ensuring accessibility and documentation.
- Implement native mobile functionalities such as offline operation, background synchronization, push notifications, deep linking, camera and file handling.
- Integrate with backend APIs, providing feedback on API design to facilitate app development.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive test coverage including unit, component, and end-to-end testing on devices or simulators.
Technical Environment
- Mobile: Transitioning from PWAs built with Ionic and Angular (with some jQuery) to a native React Native app.
- Backend: NestJS/TypeScript powering the new engine; legacy PHP core remains in use.
- Frontend: Moving from Sencha (Ext JS) to React.
- Infrastructure: AWS primarily using Lambda and EC2; messaging handled via RabbitMQ.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of 5 years in a similar role.
- Proven experience shipping React Native apps to both Apple's App Store and Google Play, including handling common deployment challenges such as app rejections, certificate expiration, staged rollouts, and SDK deprecations.
- Deep familiarity with Expo and its advantages and limitations.
- Strong TypeScript skills and capability to own and maintain a codebase.
- Experience building or maintaining component libraries, emphasizing usability, developer experience, accessibility, and comprehensive documentation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with designers without requiring fully detailed specifications.
- Dedication to writing tests to ensure software reliability.
- Good documentation skills to explain system operations.
- Comfortable engaging in technical discussions and expressing dissent respectfully.
- Swift or Kotlin skills are beneficial for native-level tasks but not mandatory.
- Experience with accommodation, property management, or travel domains is an advantage but not required.
Tools and Culture
The team utilizes GitHub and Linear for development management and encourages the use of large language models as tools without relinquishing code responsibility. Code reviews and paired programming are embraced, and incorporating new productivity tools is welcomed but not compulsory.
Hiring Process
No whiteboard or take-home tests are conducted. Candidates should present existing projects or code they are proud of, preferably relevant to Homhero’s tech stack or domain. The interview process generally includes two rounds with the CTO and an engineering lead, possibly a third if needed. Discussions include system architecture review and mutual exchange of information.
