MRI Technologist

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Manager of Diagnostic Imaging, the MRI Technologist conducts magnetic resonance imaging procedures by applying comprehensive knowledge of anatomical structure, physiological functions, MRI fundamentals, and imaging techniques. The position demands autonomous decision-making, expert technical skills, and analytical reasoning to safely and effectively operate MRI machinery and generate superior diagnostic images to assist in identifying and managing medical conditions. The technologist prioritizes patient safety, comfort, and care while complying with all applicable regulatory and institutional standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out MRI examinations according to doctors' instructions, standardized protocols, and magnetic safety requirements to produce accurate diagnostic images.
• Evaluate and verify imaging requests for completeness and correctness, liaising with radiologists or healthcare providers when necessary.
• Prepare patients for the procedure by screening for contraindications, explaining the process, obtaining informed consent, and ensuring their physical and emotional preparedness.
• Operate MRI systems, perform routine equipment calibration, and coordinate with service engineers for troubleshooting.
• Monitor patient status during scans, assess conditions before and after the exam, and manage any adverse events or emergencies.
• Correctly position patients and choose appropriate coils and imaging sequences to optimize image clarity.
• Administer contrast agents and medications responsibly, assessing renal function and allergies beforehand.
• Ensure accurate documentation, including RIS/PACS data entry, procedure coding, and completion of reports such as incident or contrast media logs.
• Maintain efficient workflow across multiple MRI units to reduce patient wait times and maximize examination throughput.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including radiologists, referring physicians, nursing, and administrative staff for timely and accurate service provision.
• Adhere to infection control protocols and safety measures, especially concerning isolation cases and within strong magnetic fields.
• Educate and support patients regarding MRI safety, coping mechanisms for anxiety, and post-exam care.
• Manage inventory to ensure exam rooms are well-stocked, reporting any shortages or defective equipment.
• Keep current with professional standards, protocols, and regulations through ongoing education and practice updates.
• Perform additional responsibilities and special assignments as delegated.

Corporate Responsibilities

• Complete all required trainings and comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, institutional policies, and established industry practices.

Qualifications and Skills

• Graduation from an accredited post-diploma MRI program or equivalent with MRI certification is mandatory.
• Registration and good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) are required.
• Certifications in CPR/BLS, contrast media injection, and cross-sectional anatomy must be current.
• One to three years' experience performing MRI scans, preferably on both 1.5T and 3.0T systems in a hospital environment.
• Authorization to initiate intravenous lines.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with capacity to adhere to protocols and maintain precise documentation.
• Excellent organization and time management skills with the ability to independently prioritize tasks.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating interpersonal skills in a collaborative clinical setting.
• Analytical problem-solving and decision-making capabilities within defined procedures.
• Committed to maintaining confidentiality and professional discretion.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Successful completion of criminal record and vulnerable sector checks.
• Provision of immunization and tuberculosis screening records.
• Willingness to work rotational shifts including days, evenings, and weekends as required.
