Mortuary Technician

About the Role

The Bank Hospital in Accra, Ghana, launching in the second quarter of 2021, is looking for a knowledgeable and empathetic Mortuary Technician. This role involves the careful handling of deceased bodies, assisting in post-mortem examinations, and providing compassionate support to bereaved relatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain the mortuary and its facilities at optimal cleanliness, safety, and operational standards.
• Manage the intake and release of bodies, ensuring they are stored under proper conditions and coordinate with portering teams during off hours.
• Keep comprehensive records and communicate effectively with other departments and funeral parlour representatives.
• Assist pathologists by preparing bodies for autopsies, replacing organs, and restoring bodies afterward.
• Support organ removal for donations related to research and transplantation as requested by medical personnel.
• Handle and label specimens for histological examination, demonstrations, or photography.
• Provide courteous and professional support to relatives, adhering strictly to customer service guidelines.
• Use photography to document gross specimens when necessary.
• Facilitate the organisation and removal of tissues for the National Blood and Tissue Donation Services.
• Adhere strictly to departmental health and safety protocols, especially during high-risk post-mortems.
• Perform specialized techniques such as removal of temporal bones, brain, and spinal cord to aid in research efforts.
• Assist with diagnostic and teaching activities related to hospital post-mortems, ensuring full compliance with legal requirements and documentation completeness.
• Maintain adequate inventories of consumables and reagents, overseeing stock control.
• Investigate departmental incidents, coordinate with wards, and escalate issues to supervisors as necessary.
• Ensure document control compliance within the mortuary department.
• Respond promptly to inquiries, investigations, and complaints.
• Train and supervise junior medical staff in both basic and advanced post-mortem procedures.
• Support the induction of new nursing personnel by providing procedural guidance related to death events.

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma in Anatomical Pathology or equivalent certification.
• Membership in a recognized professional body.
• Minimum of two years of practical experience working in a mortuary setting; experience in a private hospital is a plus.
• Proficiency in written and verbal communication in English for effective teamwork and coordination with external agencies.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Computer literacy.
• Physical capability to handle bodies and transfer them between trolleys, post-mortem tables, and refrigerated storage.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and efficiency in work.
• Flexibility regarding work hours.
• Ability to organize and manage workload effectively.
