About HotDoc and the Team
HotDoc aims to enhance healthcare experiences across Australia by improving communication between patients and doctors. Our software supports over 5,000 clinics and more than 25,000 healthcare practitioners, impacting millions of patients nationwide. You will become part of the Health Continuity team, which focuses on ensuring seamless patient care across multiple appointments and clinics.
Role Overview
This position is a mid-level engineering role responsible for end-to-end delivery of features. You will independently design, develop, deploy, and maintain software components, managing your scope and progress proactively.
Technical Environment
Our technology stack includes Ruby on Rails and Ember.js with PostgreSQL as the database. We also utilize tools such as DataDog, Sentry, and Sidekiq. While experience with Ruby on Rails and any component-based JavaScript framework (React, Vue, Angular) is expected, we encourage learning Ember.js on the job.
Operational Responsibilities
You will ensure the operational reliability of your deliverables through monitoring, alerting, participating in on-call rotations, and conducting blameless postmortems whenever issues arise. A feature is considered incomplete without full observability.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver clear, maintainable, and trusted code to successfully build and improve products and features.
- Share knowledge and encourage best practices within the team, including code reviews, pairing, and design feedback.
- Maintain the health of the systems you develop by setting up monitoring and participating in incident response activities.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to create outstanding patient experiences.
- Adopt an iterative development process that balances speed, stability, security, and modularity.
Qualifications and Experience
- Approximately 3 to 5 years of professional software engineering experience, focusing on delivered results over tenure.
- Proven production experience with Ruby on Rails.
- Familiarity with Ember.js or any comparable component-based JavaScript framework, and eagerness to learn Ember.
- Strong knowledge of relational databases, API design, and testing methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to decompose tasks, estimate timelines, and deliver consistently high-quality work.
- Regular use of AI coding assistance tools (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) and an understanding of their advantages and limitations.
Preferred Skills
- Advanced debugging and incident management capabilities.
- Experience contributing to technical proposals and engineering strategy discussions.
- Track record of efficiency improvements through AI-assisted development.
- Exposure to healthcare technology or other regulated sectors.
- Familiarity with cloud services such as AWS and monitoring platforms like DataDog, Sentry, Sidekiq, or Metabase.
