Job description
Role Overview
We are seeking a mechanically proficient and innovative Mechanical Design Engineer to create mechanical parts, assemblies, prototypes, and working models through the entire design lifecycle. The candidate will be engaged from concept formulation through 3D CAD modeling, production of engineering drawings, selection of materials, prototype creation, testing, modifications, and delivering the final product.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D CAD models for mechanical parts and assemblies.
- Prepare engineering drawings with precise dimensions, tolerances, sectional views, and material specifications.
- Execute fundamental design calculations covering structural strength, load capacity, motion, mechanisms, and selecting appropriate materials.
- Generate manufacturable mechanical design concepts and convert these into practical solutions including frames, enclosures, mechanisms, fixtures, and prototypes.
- Revise existing designs according to test feedback, client requirements, and manufacturing insights.
- Conduct design reviews to detect and mitigate potential issues in design or manufacturing.
- Create precise 3D models, assemblies, and exploded views using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo, or Fusion 360.
- Apply correct GD&T standards, tolerance limits, fits, and assembly constraints.
- Maintain version control and comprehensive documentation of all design files.
- Convert digital CAD models into physical prototypes and functional models utilizing various fabrication processes.
- Choose suitable materials and fabrication methods for prototype production, working with MDF, acrylic, plywood, plastics, metals like aluminum or mild steel, foam, and 3D-printed parts.
- Participate actively in workshop activities including machining, cutting, assembling, bonding, and finishing.
- Operate manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining where applicable.
- Assemble prototypes and conduct functionality and dimensional tests; analyze testing results to recommend designs improvements.
- Support product development from initial concept through prototype testing to the finished design stage, preparing technical documentation, bills of materials, drawings, and test reports.
Technical Skills Required
- Solid foundation in mechanical engineering design principles.
- Proficient in engineering drawing and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Familiarity with mechanical components such as fasteners, bearings, shafts, gears, springs, couplings, and mechanisms.
- Understanding of materials properties and manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of tolerances, fits, surface finishes, and machining techniques.
- Basic grasp of strength of materials and engineering mechanics concepts.
- Hands-on experience in prototype/model fabrication techniques.
- Ability to interpret and work from technical drawings.
Software Proficiency
- AutoCAD.
- At least one 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or Fusion 360.
- Preferred: ANSYS or other finite element analysis (FEA) software, SolidWorks Simulation, KeyShot or similar rendering software, 3D printing/CAD slicing applications, MS Excel, and technical documentation tools.
Education and Experience
Diploma, Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.), or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering or closely related fields such as Production, Mechatronics, or Automobile Engineering.
Experience ranging from fresh graduates to candidates with up to 3 years in mechanical design, CAD modeling, prototyping, fabrication, or model making is suitable. Freshers with strong CAD projects, prototypes, models, or workshop expertise are welcome to apply.
Desired Personal Attributes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent visualization and conceptual skills regarding mechanical systems.
- Creative mindset focused on mechanical model development.
- Great attention to precise dimensions and technical accuracy.
- Good practical fabrication skills.
- Capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Keen to learn emerging CAD tools, manufacturing methods, and prototyping technologies.
- Effective communication and ability to produce clear technical documentation.
Performance Metrics
- Accuracy and quality of designs produced.
- Timeliness in completion of 3D models and engineering drawings.
- Efficiency in prototype and model creation.
- Design precision and ease of manufacturability.
- Number and impact of design enhancements.
- Success in prototype testing and validation.
- Adherence to design documentation standards.
Typical Workflow
Concept Development → Preliminary Design → 3D CAD Modeling → Engineering Analysis → 2D Drawing Production → Material Selection → Prototype Fabrication → Assembly → Testing → Design Refinement → Final Product Delivery.
Work Environment
The position requires a blend of office-based CAD/design work and hands-on workshop activities involving physical prototyping and tool usage. Candidates must be comfortable working in both digital design settings and practical fabrication environments.
Minimum education
Diploma / ITI / Vocational
