Job description

Role Overview

This position involves creating precise and dependable cost estimates for manufactured products, particularly for modular mechanical systems such as skids, racks, and packaged units. The estimator translates design drawings and product specifications into executable cost data focusing on materials, labor, and overhead rather than entire project scopes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates for modular systems based on drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and product definitions.
  • Develop pricing models that cater to budgets through to firm proposals, clearly outlining scope and assumptions.
  • Collaborate with engineering and shop personnel to verify labor costs, fabrication methods, and production feasibility.
  • Improve consistency in pricing using templates, unit rates, and standardized processes.
  • Incorporate feedback from actual production runs to refine estimate accuracy continually.
  • Engage in discussions on make versus buy decisions, standard versus custom products, and pricing strategies for different production volumes.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in estimating costs for manufactured or fabricated products.
  • Strong knowledge of shop labor dynamics, BOM-based cost evaluation, and overhead calculations.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and convert them into practical, buildable cost estimates.
  • Proficiency in working collaboratively with sales, engineering, and operations teams.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles and product-based cost estimation techniques.
  • A detail-focused, pragmatic mindset oriented towards realistic outcomes.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
