About the Role
The Riot Operations Center (ROC) delivers 24/7 live incident response impacting player experience, operating from three globally distributed sites following SRE best practices and fostering an engineering-driven culture. Each ROC site works autonomously but remains aligned on processes and goals. As the Manager for the Dublin ROC Site, you will lead a team responsible for effective live response coverage within ROC’s follow-the-sun model, mentoring engineers to become both excellent Incident Commanders and adept systems/software triagers. You will foster a team skilled in diagnosing and resolving problems swiftly across Riot’s game ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee growth and performance of the site's engineering team.
- Provide active mentorship to engineers to enhance both their technical and interpersonal skills.
- Manage incident response coverage, including participation in on-call rotations as Incident Commander.
- Plan and balance site capacity between project work and incident management; track and report site metrics.
- Serve as the technical leader, engaging in hands-on engineering tasks, performing code and design reviews, and setting standards for alerting and incident response automation.
- Champion AI-driven innovations to improve incident response and system triage processes.
- Collaborate with Technical Program Managers and other stakeholders during critical incidents and major release launches.
- Handle local HR responsibilities such as recruitment and staff retention specific to the Dublin site.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2 years as a Senior Software Engineer or in a more advanced role.
- At least 2 years’ experience managing engineers, including hiring, cultivating talent, and fostering career growth.
- Proven expertise in triaging software issues within large production environments that you did not originally develop.
- Experience acting as Incident Commander with authoritative leadership during incidents irrespective of other roles involved.
- Track record of reducing alert fatigue through thoughtful alert design strategies.
- Proven leadership in applying SRE best practices and coaching engineers within this discipline.
- Designing, developing, prioritizing, and maintaining scalable, high-availability backend services.
- Working knowledge of container ecosystems and schedulers such as Marathon, Mesos, Kubernetes, GKE, or Amazon ECS.
- Ability to work cross-functionally across organizations and align technical standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Over 4 years experience in a high-performance Site Reliability Engineering role.
- Experience collaborating in a global follow-the-sun support model with effective communication across timezones.
- Familiarity with distributed systems and microservices architecture.
- Understanding of relational databases like MySQL.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions.
- Knowledge of software performance optimization and latency impacts in online gaming.
