Job description

About the Role

The Life Sciences Research and Development division at Thermo Fisher Scientific is composed of approximately 200 engineers focused on creating innovative Electron Microscopy (EM) solutions and applications to promote a cleaner, healthier, and safer world. Our teams operate globally from Eindhoven (Netherlands), Brno (Czech Republic), Hyderabad (India), and Bordeaux (France), combining expertise in hardware, software, and scientific applications.

Within this dynamic setting, we are bolstering our software capabilities related to the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) workflow. We seek a Software Engineering Manager to head a dedicated, impactful team responsible for a key application that enables scientists to process, analyze, and interpret microscopy data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities for a team of software engineers.
  • Create and nurture a cooperative, inclusive, and high-performing team environment.
  • Manage career development, evaluate performance, and encourage continuous learning.
  • Participate in recruiting and onboarding processes for new hires.
  • Offer hands-on technical direction for software design, system architecture, and development efforts.
  • Make pivotal technical decisions and manage trade-offs within the application.
  • Ensure the design of scalable, maintainable, and robust systems.
  • Contribute code to critical parts of the application as necessary.
  • Oversee full lifecycle delivery of the team’s software application, including planning, development, testing, and deployment stages.
  • Partner with product managers to determine project scope, timeline, and roadmap.
  • Maintain rigorous standards for coding, testing, and documentation quality.
  • Promote consistency and transparency in project delivery schedules.
  • Advocate and implement modern engineering practices including continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), automated testing, and code reviews.
  • Continuously refine development processes, tooling, and team productivity.
  • Guarantee system reliability, high performance, and ease of maintenance.
  • Collaborate across functions—scientists, application experts, and other engineering teams—to ensure alignment.
  • Synchronize with global R&D groups on standards, architecture, and integration objectives.
  • Contribute to company-wide engineering initiatives and facilitate knowledge exchange across locations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in software development, including technical leadership or team lead roles.
  • Proven experience managing or mentoring software engineers, either formally or informally.
  • Strong expertise in software architecture, design methodologies, and development best practices.
  • Practical familiarity with modern development tools and workflows, including version control and CI/CD automation.
  • Ability to effectively balance direct technical work with managerial responsibilities.
  • Experience collaborating in cross-functional and international team settings.
  • Excellent communication skills enabling effective interaction with diverse stakeholders within a global company.

Preferred Skills

  • Background in scientific software development, imaging, or data-heavy applications.
  • Knowledge of Python, C++, or equivalent programming languages used in high-performance or scientific computing.
  • Experience working with DevOps, DevSecOps practices, Jenkins, and GitLab pipelines.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and managing large datasets.
  • Interest in life sciences, microscopy, or scientific research fields.
