Machine Learning Engineering Manager

About the Role

Join the Joule Work Platform Services team as the Machine Learning Engineering Manager, leading the creation of a scalable, enterprise-grade AI platform that supports AI-driven workflow experiences across SAP's offerings. Your leadership will cover the entire spectrum of platform services development—including conversational AI, agentic workflows, tool integrations, and seamless connectivity to major SAP business applications such as S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, and Supply Chain Management.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute a compelling platform vision, guiding your teams from core service architecture to reliable production deployment.
• Represent the team's technical direction to stakeholders internally and externally including product leaders, partner teams, and customers.
• Collaborate extensively with development leads, AI/ML engineers, product owners, managers, and DevOps teams to deliver and continuously evolve platform capabilities for accelerated Joule adoption.
• Manage the full software product lifecycle from design and implementation through testing of new platform features in an agile setting.
• Ensure excellent product support, handling customer communications, incident resolution, and adhering to SLA commitments.
• Provide architectural and functional guidance while actively coding to deliver highly available and scalable AI/ML platform services.
• Lead, mentor and develop your engineering team through staffing, career growth, and skills enhancement, fostering a best-in-class AI engineering culture.
• Participate in location-level initiatives including cross-unit collaboration, training, hiring, internship management, and budget planning.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• A degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related disciplines.
• At least 8 years of experience in software product development focusing on AI/ML systems and platform engineering.
• Proven leadership in cultivating design excellence and delivering impactful AI-infused products.
• Strong expertise with Agile methodologies including implementation across Development, QA, and Release teams.
• Exceptional communication skills to convey vision and strategy to engineering teams, partners, and customers.
• Demonstrated ability to build cohesive teams and foster efficient cross-functional cooperation.
• Technical acumen respected by senior engineers, capable of making informed architectural decisions.
• Well-developed organizational skills comfortable navigating fast-changing environments.

Technical Skills

• Experience delivering SaaS solutions using microservice architecture.
• Proficient with container technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Cloud deployment expertise on AWS, GCP, or Azure platforms.
• Programming proficiency in Python and/or Java.
• Knowledge of DevOps and MLOps practices.
• Hands-on work with Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), involving prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
• Familiarity with agentic AI frameworks such as LangChain or AutoGen and RAG-based architectures.
• Experience building or managing LLM evaluation and observability pipelines.

Preferred Experience

Familiarity with SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), AI Core, or enterprise AI platform engineering is advantageous.
