Machine Learning Engineer - Search

Overview

Perplexity is looking for a seasoned Machine Learning Engineer to develop cutting-edge search technologies, concentrating primarily on retrieval and ranking. This role involves advancing the state of search quality through various technical approaches.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive continuous improvements in search quality by innovating with models, datasets, and toolsets.
• Design and implement fundamental components for the search platform and associated model infrastructure.
• Develop, train, and assess retrieval, ranking, and classification models, including large language models (LLMs).
• Deploy scalable and efficient ML models ranging from simple boosting techniques to sophisticated LLMs.
• Construct and fine-tune retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines to support data grounding and answer generation.
• Work cross-functionally with teams including Data, AI, Infrastructure, and Product to guarantee rapid and high-quality deliverables.

Qualifications

• In-depth expertise in search and retrieval system architectures and their evaluation metrics.
• Demonstrated experience working with large-scale search or recommendation systems.
• Highly motivated, autonomous, and accountable for project execution.
• At least 5 years of professional experience related to search or recommendation system projects.
