Machine Learning Engineer (Recommendation) - Global E-Commerce

Team Overview

Our group focuses on developing large-scale recommendation systems across various ByteDance products and affiliated platforms. The team specializes in crafting algorithms, models, and strategies designed to enhance e-commerce recommendation experiences globally.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop recommendation systems that handle diverse content types including products, short videos, and live streams, creating unified models to meet different e-commerce objectives across multiple countries.
• Optimize recommendation models on a massive scale by applying techniques such as deep learning, transfer learning, and multi-task learning.
• Perform data mining and thorough analysis to elevate the relevance and quality of recommended content.
• Research and address challenges in content recommendation, including diversity, new content discovery, cold-start issues for new users/items, and high-quality product or live streamer identification.
• Innovate and implement state-of-the-art e-commerce algorithms and models to improve recommendation systems.
• Support building scalable, optimized AI and machine learning models for production environments.
• Develop algorithms for real-time extraction, transformation, and loading of large-scale unstructured data to facilitate AI/ML deployments starting from theoretical data science models.
• Run model performance experiments, troubleshoot issues, and debug problems identified during deployment.
• Collaborate in teams while leveraging expertise in statistics, scripting, and programming languages relevant to the business.
• Integrate and work closely with the software platforms where AI/ML models are deployed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
• Strong foundation in data structures and algorithms with excellent problem-solving and programming capabilities.
• Hands-on experience in applied machine learning, acquainted with algorithms including Collaborative Filtering, Matrix Factorization, Factorization Machines, Word2Vec, Logistic Regression, Gradient Boosting Trees, and Deep Neural Networks.
• Practical knowledge of key recommendation system components such as recall, sorting, reranking, cold-start problems, and mainstream industry recommendation models.
• Proficiency in C++ and Python; experience with at least one Big Data technology (e.g., Hive SQL, Spark, or MapReduce) and one Deep Learning framework (e.g., TensorFlow or PyTorch).
• Excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, teamwork abilities, and a strong willingness to learn and implement new technologies and conduct experiments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in personalized recommendation, online advertising, or information retrieval fields.
• Published academic papers in reputed conferences such as KDD, NeurIPS, WWW, SIGIR, WSDM, CIKM, ICLR, ICML, IJCAI, AAAI, or RecSys.
• Strong performance in data mining or machine learning competitions, including ACM-ICPC, NOI, or IOI.
• Development of recognized machine learning projects available on GitHub or personal portfolios.
