Role Overview

The Legal Head at Stanbic Bank Uganda will be responsible for shaping and executing the country’s legal strategy in line with the Group’s standards and overall business goals. This senior leadership position provides expert legal counsel to executive management and key stakeholders while managing the bank’s legal and reputational risks. The role also involves leading the legal function to support sustainable business growth, innovation, and close coordination with the Standard Bank Group regional legal team.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement the legal strategy for the country aligned with group standards and business objectives.
Offer expert legal advice on complex, high-value, and strategic business matters to executive leadership and governance bodies.
Manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risks by ensuring their accurate identification, assessment, and mitigation.
Provide legal guidance and oversight on strategic and cross-border transactions across various business divisions.
Lead the drafting, reviewing, negotiation, and interpretation of legal contracts, policies, and necessary legal documents.
Oversee dispute management including litigation and engagement of external counsel to protect and advance the bank’s interests.
Maintain strong professional relationships with regulators, legal bodies, external lawyers, and other stakeholders.
Drive continuous improvement and embrace legal technology to enhance the legal department’s effectiveness.
Lead, develop, and mentor the legal team to foster a culture of excellence, teamwork, and responsibility.
Supervise the legal budget, external counsel expenses, and ensure compliance with governance requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

Postgraduate degree in law from a recognized institution.
Admission to practice as a lawyer with relevant professional legal qualifications.
Minimum of 15 years post-qualification legal experience including over 10 years in managing legal risk and leading complex negotiations within the financial services industry.
At least 5 years in senior legal leadership roles, especially with experience in wholesale and corporate transactions.
Proven ability in crafting legal strategies, leading legal teams, and managing legal exposures in regulated environments.
In-depth knowledge of financial services laws, regulations, and corporate legal practices.
Must satisfy "fit and proper" regulatory criteria applicable for executive management positions.
