About the Role and Employer
Our client is a reputable law boutique specializing in employment and labour law, located in downtown Toronto. They are currently seeking a litigation legal assistant with substantial experience to join their busy and dynamic team. This role entails working closely with senior lawyers on a high volume of employment-related disputes within a lean and collaborative work environment where your contributions are acknowledged and impactful.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, format, and meticulously proofread legal pleadings, motion records, affidavits, facta, and correspondence connected to employment claims.
- Manage litigation files from opening through to closure, ensuring all matters are systematically organized throughout their lifecycle, including settlement and trial stages.
- Handle the issuance, filing, and service of court and tribunal documentation, while monitoring limitation periods and procedural deadlines.
- Schedule and coordinate examinations for discovery, mediations, pre-trial conferences, and court hearings.
- Prepare supporting materials for proceedings in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Small Claims Court, and various administrative tribunals.
- Compile document briefs, chronologies, and case summaries to aid legal counsel effectively.
- Serve as a liaison with clients, opposing legal representatives, court officials, and mediators.
- Maintain up-to-date electronic and paper-based filing systems with accurate indexing.
- Support docketing, billing activities, and general administrative tasks within the litigation team.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum two years' experience as a legal assistant in civil litigation, preferably with experience in employment, labour, or human rights law.
- Proficient understanding of the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure, including the Simplified Procedure and court electronic filing systems.
- Knowledge or experience with tribunal procedures, particularly the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO), is advantageous.
- Comfortable using practice management, document management, and billing software platforms.
- Strong written communication abilities with keen attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proven ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines in a composed manner.
- Possession of a Legal Assistant or Law Clerk diploma is considered a beneficial qualification.
