Job description

Overview

We are collaborating with a technology firm established by seasoned professionals with extensive experience in enterprise architecture and quantitative systems. Our aim is to build a core engineering team to transform complex business and quantitative ideas into functional software. The role requires mastery in understanding new domains, system architecture, resolving challenging problems, and delivering dependable solutions. Engineers who ask insightful questions, employ fundamental reasoning, extend beyond conventional tools, and develop well-informed perspectives are highly valued. The use of AI is integrated into research and development processes, and candidates must be capable of guiding these tools, interpreting their outputs, and ensuring they address the problems effectively.

Opportunity

You will collaborate directly with decision makers and domain experts within a small, flat-structured team. Responsibilities span defining problems, designing systems, implementation, inquiry, and operational maintenance. Handling data processing is one component of the job, while the ability to tackle unfamiliar challenges, grasp their underlying principles, and form well-reasoned solutions is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clarify ambiguous requirements into explicit problem statements, identifying stakeholders, constraints, and success metrics.
  • Conduct thorough investigations using research, calculations, profiling, and experimentation to separate facts from assumptions and identify root causes.
  • Evaluate alternative solutions, articulate their trade-offs, and recommend the most effective approach, challenging plans where evidence supports better choices.
  • Develop and maintain solutions throughout their lifecycle, including aspects like testing, deployment, security, data integrity, and fault recovery.
  • Produce code, interfaces, and tools that are comprehensible and extensible by other engineers, utilizing engineering reviews to enhance decisions and knowledge sharing.

Autonomy and Accountability

The role involves significant independence and personal responsibility for decisions. Candidates need to recognize when to seek additional evidence or input, transparently manage uncertainty, and adapt plans as new information arises.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Robust programming expertise coupled with a practical grasp of algorithms, data structures, state management, concurrency, and system behaviors, including the ability to explain design mechanisms and acknowledge knowledge boundaries.
  • Proven experience delivering complex software projects and owning their operational behavior, including discussing design choices, alternatives, and post-deployment outcomes.
  • Versatile experience across various problems, systems, or domains, able to apply transferable insights and delineate their limitations.
  • A track record of delving deep into fundamental questions, pursuing multiple investigative layers beyond initial answers to refine solutions.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences, conveying recommendations openly with clarity about uncertainties and trade-offs.

Preferred Experience

Experience in quantitative disciplines, financial markets, high-performance computing challenges, or complex data systems is beneficial though not mandatory. Familiarity with specific frameworks, market jargon, or processing large-scale event streams is an optional asset.

Working with AI

The company integrates AI regularly in research and development. Candidates must be adept at steering AI tools, exploring unfamiliar technologies, assessing generated outputs, and verifying that solutions meet requirements responsibly.

Application Guidance

Applicants should be prepared to present examples of their contributions to delivered projects, complex problem investigations, and decisions influenced by new insights, always respecting confidentiality constraints. The evaluation process includes a technical discussion involving a hypothetical scenario and a practical exercise, with AI and reference materials permitted. The assessment focuses on reasoning, investigative skills, and verification ability. Familiarity with specific streaming technologies is not necessary.

Location and Work Arrangement

This full-time role offers flexible hybrid working with onsite attendance as needed, with key office hubs in London, Cambridge, and New York.
