Job description
Position Overview
Seeking a backend-focused Python expert for a lead role at a successful and well-funded FinTech start-up based in London. This pivotal position involves leading a small, skilled technology team responsible for developing new features, enhancements, and refactoring on a core banking platform that integrates with major financial institutions such as HSBC. The codebase is relatively new, offering multiple exciting development projects.

You will balance technical leadership and hands-on development with an approximately equal split between designing architecture and guiding the team. Setting high standards, mentoring junior members, and promoting a culture centered on continuous improvement and self-development will be essential.
Location and Work Model
Work will be based primarily in the Central London office with flexibility to work remotely two days weekly under a hybrid arrangement.
Candidate Profile
- Proven experience as a Software Engineer with strong Python skills and comprehensive knowledge of software engineering practices and the full software development lifecycle.
- Demonstrated technical and team leadership abilities, including mentoring, conducting one-to-one meetings, and delivering performance reviews.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform; experience with AWS or Microsoft Azure is acceptable.
- Proficient in API development, ideally with FastAPI framework expertise.
- Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automation testing, and deployment strategies.
- Deep knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, data structures, design patterns, and algorithms.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills with a pragmatic approach.
- Degree holder in a STEM field, achieving at least a 2:1 classification.
