Job description
Overview
This role involves leading engineering efforts for control systems in utility-scale inverter-based resource (IBR) power plants exceeding 1 GW, including solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), hybrid power plants, and large microgrids feeding hydrogen process plants and connected to extra-high voltage (EHV) grids. You will provide in-depth technical leadership throughout all stages of engineering, testing, commissioning, and ensuring compliance with grid codes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead conceptual, basic, and detailed engineering of control systems tailored for large IBR power plants.
- Develop and optimize control system architectures for normal, contingency, and emergency operation scenarios of various IBR plants.
- Design control schemes accounting for power components like inverters, STATCOMs, wind turbine generators (WTGs), BESS, and others to meet grid code requirements.
- Create detailed functional specifications for controllers ranging from simple photovoltaic plant controllers to complex hybrid system controllers.
- Utilize automatic generation control (AGC) expertise to manage power system operations via control system design.
- Design and review communication protocols (Modbus TCP/IP, IEC 104, IEC 61850 GOOSE) taking into account their advantages and limitations.
- Set up and tune control parameters such as gain, time constant, anti-windup, and filters to ensure optimal system performance.
- Conduct power system studies including static, dynamic, and transient analyses using tools like PSS/E, DIgSILENT, PSCAD; review study reports to inform control system tuning.
- Deploy real-time digital simulator (RTDS) systems for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing to validate control system performance.
- Implement GPS/GNSS time synchronization techniques compliant with IEEE 1588 (PTP) and IEEE C37.238 protocols.
- Configure and interface advanced numerical meters and measuring devices, ensuring accurate power quality measurements as per IEC 61000-4-30 edition 4.
- Integrate phasor measurement units (PMUs) in compliance with IEEE C37.118 for synchrophasor data aggregation and SCADA interaction.
- Interpret and apply grid code requirements precisely in developing control system specifications.
- Stay informed on international IEC/IEEE standards and scientific literature relevant to control system design.
- Implement cybersecurity practices aligned with international standards.
- Assess operational risks, devise mitigation strategies, and validate hybrid controller and power plant controller logic against grid code steady-state and dynamic requirements before commissioning.
- Execute cold and hot commissioning processes by tuning control system parameters on-site.
- Troubleshoot control system and controller performance issues during commissioning and operation, using RTDS to replicate scenarios for root cause analysis and parameter adjustment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Engineering or Technology in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
- Master's degree (M.Tech) specializing in Control Systems.
- Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Control Systems.
Minimum education
Bachelor's Degree
