About the Role
Cyient, a leader in engineering design and manufacturing services, is seeking a seasoned Lead Engineer specialized in PLC automation to join their Pune office. The role centers on spearheading the complete PLC software development lifecycle, managing a team of automation engineers, and coordinating across multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality control systems aligned with safety and industry standards.
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee the entire PLC software development process, including requirement gathering, architecture design, logic development, simulation, testing, and commissioning assistance.
- Create and evaluate control logic using Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, and SFC on platforms like Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Mitsubishi, Beckhoff, or CODESYS.
- Design and integrate Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and SCADA applications to meet project requirements.
- Implement and manage industrial communication protocols such as Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, IO-Link, and CAN.
- Develop and review critical engineering documentation including functional design specifications, software design documents, I/O configurations, test protocols, and commissioning reports.
- Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning activities, and provide advanced troubleshooting and escalation support in the field.
- Ensure adherence to functional safety norms and relevant regulatory standards within all automation projects.
- Guide, mentor, and supervise a team of PLC and automation engineers, enforcing coding standards and encouraging reusable software libraries.
- Estimate work efforts, plan software development packages, monitor progress, and communicate status to stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation teams to harmonize control software with overall system design.
Required Expertise
- Extensive hands-on experience in programming PLCs with various control logic languages.
- Skilled in HMI and SCADA systems development and integration.
- Thorough understanding of industrial networking and fieldbus protocols like Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus, and OPC UA.
- Experience with servo and motion control systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), robotics interfaces, and safety PLC implementations.
- Familiar with electrical diagrams including schematics, P&IDs, input/output sizing, and fundamentals of panel design.
- Proven leadership capabilities in managing and mentoring a mid-sized engineering team.
- Exceptional problem-solving aptitude with the ability to conduct root cause analysis, especially under field commissioning pressures.
- Strong communication skills to effectively engage with customers, vendors, and cross-functional teams.
- A committed ownership approach paired with well-developed planning, estimation, and delivery management skills.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline.
- 8 to 12 years of professional involvement in industrial automation and control systems.

The Lead Software Engineer – PLC will act as the key technical authority for PLC/SCADA/HMI development within the project or product scope, balancing direct engineering duties with leadership responsibilities to ensure software quality, schedule adherence, and alignment with functional and safety requirements.
